A sex offender released from prison on parole last month after serving a four-year sentence has been arrested.

William Rupert Astle, 81, was arrested Tuesday after the Correctional Service of Canada issued a warrant of apprehension, suspension and recommitment to custody of statutory release, the Manitoba Integrated High Risk Sex Offender Unit said in a statement Wednesday.

The statement provided no details on the reason for the arrest.

Astle is considered a high risk to reoffend sexually against young girls.

Astle was released from Stony Mountain Institution on Sept. 8 with a list of conditions, including a prohibition from being in, near or around areas where children under 18 years of age would be, including schools, park swimming pools, shopping malls and recreational centres, unless he was accompanied by an adult.

The conditions were in effect until Jan. 30, 2018.

But Astle was also given a lifetime ban on going to a public park or swimming area where children under 16 could be, or to be at a daycare, school ground, playground or community centre.

Astle’s sexual crimes date back to 1969, when he was first charged with indecent assault. He has since been convicted of several sexual offences, including sexual interference with a child known to him and exposing himself to two other young girls playing in a backyard.

Astle was last incarcerated for exposing himself to a nine-year-old girl in the toy department of a Winnipeg Walmart in February 2014.
