The province has moved to hand out rapid antigen COVID-19 tests in more locations this weekend, as testing protocols are slated to change next week.

The Manitoba government set up tables at two of Winnipeg’s largest malls — St. Vital Centre and Polo Park — handing out kits to passersby between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday. The same is expected Sunday, the province said.

At St. Vital Centre on Saturday, mall patrons could be seen walking up and down the hallway next to the free test table, clutching kits along with their shopping bags.

Al, 73, had run out of kits at home — his friend, who was getting a haircut in the mall, let him know there were tests available.

“I got them just in case — in case I’m getting sick, coming down with something,” the senior, who did not give his last name, said.

The province will close all of its polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test sites to the general public after Friday.

Pre-operative patients will still be able to make COVID-19 testing appointments by contacting the Dakota Medical Centre at 204-254-2087 or the Minor Illness and Injury Clinic online at covidwpg.com, the province said.

Rapid test kits will remain widely available for free, including at retail stores and Winnipeg public libraries.

The stores include certain locations of Loblaw and Shoppers Drug Mart; London Drugs; Co-op; Northern, Northmart and Solo; Rexall; Save On Foods; Safeway, Sobeys and IGA; and Walmart.
