A man who stole from two different Liquor Marts two days in a row has been sentenced to more than a month of house arrest.

Michael Chartrand, 31, pleaded guilty in Brandon provincial court on Monday to theft under $5,000 and resisting arrest.

On March 9, employees at the Brandon Corral Centre Liquor Mart called police to report a man had just stolen a large bottle of Grey Goose vodka, valued at $107.04, Crown attorney Yaso Mathu said.

The man, later identified by police as Chartrand, grabbed the bottle of vodka off the shelf and went into the wine section, where he placed the bottle in his backpack, Mathu said.

When an employee asked what he did with the bottle, Chartrand told them he had put it on a shelf in the wine section.

Chartrand left the store as the employee went to check for the bottle, only to discover it was not there, Mathu said.

The next day, Chartrand and another man went into the Victoria Avenue Liquor Mart and took two bottles of Bacardi rum without paying, Mathu said.

The value of bottles stolen was $84.98.

Police located the two men walking in the area and approached them, Mathu said.

The man with Chartrand would not stop for police and continued walking, Mathu said. Chartrand began running, but was subdued a short distance away.

The stolen rum was located in a backpack Chartrand was carrying.

“Mr. Chartrand was back stealing the very next day,” Mathu said. “Not only is he stealing but he resists arrest.”

Defence lawyer Ryan Fawcett told the court Chartrand doesn’t remember committing the offences.

“He remembers waking up in the drunk tank and being charged with two counts of theft,” Fawcett said.

Since the offence, Fawcett said that Chartrand has taken part in addictions treatment and programming.

Judge John Combs sentenced Chartrand to 45 days of house arrest to be followed by one year of probation.

“Thefts from liquor stores is a huge problem in this community and other communities,” Combs said. “If you need to consume alcohol, Mr. Chartrand, stealing it is not an option.”

Chartrand was also ordered to repay $192.02 for the stolen liquor and is banned from attending Liquor Marts while on probation.
