BRANDON — Two men face various charges after an ATM was tied to a pickup truck and ripped from inside a local business early Monday.
At 4:14 a.m., city police responded to an alarm triggered at Little Chief’s Place convenience store on Lyndale Drive.
As they arrived on scene, officers reported a truck had backed into the front of the store, knocking out the doors and glass windows, police said.
Spotting police, two suspects then sped away in the truck, dragging an ATM from inside the building along with them.
“However, (the cash machine) fell off almost immediately when the vehicle turned south,” Const. Myran Hamm told the Sun.
Following a short chase, the suspect vehicle ran into a ditch and became stuck in a creek bank.
A 27-year-old man was arrested at the site; one suspect fled on foot.
A 34-year-old man was arrested in the area just before 8 a.m.
Around noon Monday, a maintenance crews was still cleaning up the mess at Little Chief’s Place. A big hole had been punched through the front of the convenience store and its interior was also in disarray, with inventory scattered all over the floor.
Police said the suspects had recently stolen the truck involved in the ATM heist from a business located on the 4800 block of Victoria Avenue East. The pair are facing many charges, including breaking and entering, theft of an ATM, and theft of a motor vehicle.
Hamm told the Sun the suspects could be hit with additional charges, since investigators believe they are responsible for committing numerous other crimes throughout southwestern Manitoba.
Investigators suspect the string of crimes includes a failed robbery at a local Boston Pizza in mid-April, police said. Similar to the incident Monday, someone tried to steal an ATM by reversing a truck through the front window of the Brandon restaurant and tying a rope around the machine.
The two men, who had not yet been named by police, were remanded into custody for a Thursday court date.
