THE second day of Winnipeg’s revamped garbage and recycling collection schedule resulted in a jump in the number of complaints and an admission from city hall that the number of missed pick-ups had increased.

City hall said 10 per cent of households on the east side of Winnipeg were missed Tuesday, while all collections were completed on the west side. Any missed households would be revisited Wednesday, it said.

On Monday, the city reported only two per cent of households — on both sides of the city — were missed.

Attention is focused on curbside collection this week as two new contractors take over the duties: GFL Environmental Inc. has the contract for the city’s east side; Miller Waste Systems has the contract for the west.

There were about 31,200 households on Tuesday’s collection routes, compared to 34,500 households Monday. There were 35,000 households on Wednesday’s routes.

The number of reports to 311 were up substantially Tuesday, compared with Monday. A civic spokeswoman said there were 455 reports about missed garbage, recycling or yard waste collection, compared with 151 on Monday.

City officials maintain the rollout is going according to plan; they expected some missed pick-ups and longer days as Miller and GFL introduce new employees and new equipment on city streets. Miller and GFL have brought in extra crews for the first two weeks and the city has also contracted a third company to assist in areas with a higher risk of arson.

The city said homeowners should leave their carts out until 10 p.m. If they haven’t been emptied by then, put them away and bring them out again by 7 a.m. the next day.
