Manitoba has appointed two new provincial court judges in one of the busiest northern courts, including an Indigenous former Crown attorney from The Pas.
On Wednesday, Justice Minister Kelvin Goertzen announced Vincent George Sinclair has been appointed to fill an additional full-time judge position the province added to Thompson, and former defence lawyer Curtis Matthew Briscoe has been appointed to take over a vacancy following another judge’s transfer.
Sinclair, a member of Opaskwayak Cree Nation, was called to the bar in 2010, and has worked for Manitoba Prosecutions, including attending northern circuit courts. He was recommended by a judicial appointment committee to fill the new judge position.
Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Grand Chief Garrison Settee commended the province’s appointment of Sinclair, an MKO citizen.
“We know there is a need for increased representation of First Nations people working within the justice system… Being appointed as a provincial court judge is a huge achievement and is a result of your hard work,” Settee said in a statement Thursday.
“Judge Vincent Sinclair is a role model for other First Nations citizens who wish to pursue a career in the field of law.”
Briscoe was called to the bar in 2013, and has worked at Law North since then, becoming a partner in 2016 and the corporation’s senior partner and president in 2020. He was appointed to fill a vacancy on the bench in Thompson after former provincial court judge Todd Rambow was transferred to The Pas.
An official swearing-in ceremony has not yet been scheduled.
