Homicide detectives have asked for surveillance footage from businesses to help them probe a double shooting in front of the Winnipeg Police Service headquarters.

One man was killed and another injured in or near the parking lot at Garry Street and Graham Avenue around 3:40 a.m. Wednesday.

Officers gave one of the victims emergency first aid before he was taken to hospital. He later died. His name has not been released.

ERIK PINDERA / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS One man was killed and another injured in or near the parking lot at Garry Street and Graham Avenue around 3:40 a.m. Wednesday.

The second victim was taken to hospital in stable condition.

On Thursday, there was no trace of the crime scene in or around the lot.

Police spokeswoman Const. Dani McKinnon did not have further details. However, she did note the shootings didn’t happen in a nearby lounge, as was suggested in some reports Wednesday.

She said it’s too early to say whether the homicide unit is looking for one or multiple suspects.

Loreili Isaak, who has tended bar for about 12 years at the Windsor Hotel down the block, said she saw police in the area Wednesday morning.

“The parking lot was taped off and the police car was in the middle of the parking lot, where it was taped, and he was talking to a woman,” said the bartender.

“Nothing surprises me these days. I think this world has gone crazy… there’s so much crime, everywhere,” she said.

A 55-year-old man who lives in the hotel, who didn’t want his name printed, said “a lot of shady people” frequent the area, including gang members and drug dealers.

“Everybody has a weapon of some sort. If they don’t have a weapon, they carry hammers or whatever,” said the man who has lived in the hotel for about four years.
