An off-duty Winnipeg police officer was stabbed early this morning when he accosted a man trying to break into his personal vehicle.
The officer was leaving work at about 3:30 a.m. when he spotted a man trying to break into his car parked downtown. The officer, in his civilian clothes, confronted the man and identified himself as a police officer before he was stabbed.
The officer broke free and on-duty police officers arrived quickly and arrested the suspect.

The male suspect, 45, is known to police and is being held in custody, Const. Rob Carver said Friday.
The injured officer, a 10-year veteran, was taken to hospital, treated and released. Carver said he will likely only miss a few days work. “Everyone is very thankful this injury is not life-threatening,” he said.
“(It was) a very, very serious incident,” Carver said. “I can speak to my training as an officer that when confronted with a weapon, a situation can easily turn very serious.”
The officer’s training likely prevented him from being injured more seriously, Carver said.
The incident happened at Graham Avenue and Garry Street where the officer’s vehicle was parked.
“You work with someone on a daily basis and find out they’ve been assaulted and could have been seriously injured,” said Carver. “Like any other workplace, when one person is assaulted everyone is a little on edge.”
