Winnipeg police have arrested a 16-year-old male, after a mother and infant were robbed and a vehicle stolen in a gun-point carjacking at a city library Friday.
A second suspect remains at large, police said Monday.
At about 2 p.m. Friday, the woman was in the entrance of a library in the St. John’s neighbourhood when two people she didn’t know accosted her, grabbing her purse, police said. As she hung on, she was dragged and her stroller was knocked over, while the baby sat inside it.
The suspects made off with the purse but came back with the woman’s car keys minutes later. They jumped into the vehicle and bystanders tried to stop them from fleeing, police said.
One of the suspects pointed a gun at one of the Good Samaritans before driving off.
The woman didn’t ask for medical attention for her or her baby, police said.
On Saturday, officers on patrol in the North End spotted the stolen vehicle in the area of Salter and Powers streets and tried to pull it over.
The suspect vehicle slowed down and one person jumped out and ran off. Officers chased and apprehended a young male and turned him over to major crimes investigators.
A 16-year-old from Winnipeg is charged with armed robbery with a firearm, possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and driving while prohibited.
He remains in custody.
