Winnipeg police are searching for four suspects with lengthy court records accused in the fatal shooting of a 42-year-old man in a St. Vital home in November while children slept nearby.

At about 5:30 a.m. on Nov. 29, Tyler Patrick Yarema was wounded in a home on the 200 block of Forrester Avenue. Police, who had been called after reports of gunshots, sent Yarema to hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

A dog was also shot.

Homicide investigators don’t believe the killing was random, but Winnipeg Police Service Const. Rob Carver said he couldn’t provide further details on the shooting, including whether police believe it was gang- or drug-related or if the suspects had broken into the home.

Bryce Alexander Keating, 23; Jake Steven Ducharme, 32; Jamie Lee Rudolph, 33; and Jamie Rae Shorting, 24, are all wanted for second-degree murder. Police have warned the public not to approach the suspects.

Homicide detectives already arrested a fifth suspect, 24-year-old Keegan Shamus Little, on Dec. 21. He was charged with second-degree murder and detained in custody.

All five suspects in Yarema’s killing frequently ran afoul of the law, including convictions for violent offences, a Free Press review of court records shows.

Most recently, Little pleaded guilty in November 2019 to possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking and possession of a prohibited firearm. He was sentenced to 20 months in jail. His sentence included a lifetime weapons prohibition.

Rudolph was granted bail in July after being charged with two counts of assault and failing to comply with a release order. According to court records, Rudolph has been charged with two counts of attempted murder allegedly committed the same day Yarema was killed, as well as four counts of possessing a firearm while prohibited.

Rudolph is charged with another count of assault and attempted assault allegedly committed three days before the killing, as well as five counts of breaching court orders.

The number of suspects is unusual.

“I certainly don’t remember the last time (the WPS) identified five suspects… in a homicide,” said Carver, a veteran officer.

Yarema was active in amateur sports in the community.

Bobby J. St. Laurent, 56, runs the Kildonan Sponge Hockey League as well as a baseball league, and knew Yarema for about 20 years.

“He was a very fun and wild guy… and he was very talented at sports,” St. Laurent told the Free Press Tuesday. “He loved to be the centre of attention, and he got to be the centre of attention wherever he went.”

St. Laurent said he was shocked when he learned of Yarema’s death.

“I had tears in my eyes when I heard,” he said, adding he’s pleased police have identified suspects.
