Winnipeggers who plan to attend the Pride Winnipeg Festival in 2018 should update their calendars. Pride Winnipeg announced Saturday it was rescheduling the ten-day event, in order to accommodate a need for more space during the Festival at The Forks.

The 2018 Pride Winnipeg Festival will now take place from July 20 to July 29, with the Festival at the Forks on July 28 and 29. The parade will take also take place on July 29. In previous years, Pride Winnipeg kicked off its festival towards the end of May, holding the Festival at the Forks during the first weekend in June.

In previous years, said Pride Winnipeg president Jonathan Niemczak, Pride’s Festival at the Forks was immediately followed by the Winnipeg International Children’s Festival.

“We just can’t expand, because they have the rest of the festival site,” said Niemczak. “Which is fair. They were there first, before we moved to The Forks.”

Pushing back Pride’s Festival at the Forks, said Niemczak, will allow the event to use more space and accomodate more attendees. He estimates more than 20,000 people showed up at The Forks for the outdoor weekend festival this past year.

In 2020, Pride Winnipeg will be expanding its festival to accomodate the 2020 Fierté Canada Pride Festival. That event was already scheduled for July of that year.

“It’s the same timeframe, and so any time you move a major event you’re always going to be faced with some logistical challenges that you may have not encountered in the past,” said Niemczak.

“It’s better that we work out those conflicts over the next two years, (rather) than trying to figure that all out in 2020 on top of trying to run the Canada Pride festival.

Niemczak said more information is available on the Pride Winnipeg Facebook page. The organization will hold a town hall meeting “in the coming weeks” to answer any questions about the change.
