Two weeks after promising to release fire plans for Little Grand Rapids and Pauingassi first nations, Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler said Monday that only Ottawa has the authority to make that information public.
And while he was at it, Schuler scolded Liberal MLA Jon Gerrard for seeking the information while people are busy fighting wildfires threatening the two remote northern communities.
Gerrard told question period Schuler promised the information when Gerrard asked May 23.
Monday, Schuler said the Manitoba Emergency Measures Organization gets access to the plans, but isn't allowed to share them publicly.
"Those are federal jurisdiction," he said. "I will show him where he should go in the federal government."
Gerrard argued everyone needs to know what the plans are when a crisis hits so they can discuss if they're working.
He also again raised fears previously raised by Kewatinook Liberal MLA Judy Klassen that the evacuees are being preyed upon in Winnipeg by drug dealers.
