Winnipeg police have announced arrests in a handful of recent incidents while continuing to investigate others.
On Monday, city police said a 21-year-old man had been charged with second-degree murder in the death of 22-year-old Jorden James Bateman.
Bateman had been assaulted at a residence on the 500 block of Toronto Street in the early hours of Saturday. He was sent to hospital in critical condition but died of his injuries.
Jonathan Dakota Cree Chaske remains in custody. Police believe the victim and suspect knew each other previously.
At around 4:45 a.m. Monday, officers entered an apartment building — where the windows had been shot out — on the 500 block of Elgin Avenue, and found a blood trail leading to a suite where two women were injured.
The women told officers they were shot at while standing in front of the building waiting for the door to open. They were sent to hospital in critical and unstable condition, respectively; both have since been upgraded to stable condition.
A male suspect fled on foot. Police are investigating.
Two weapons arrests were made at two separate shelters in the South Point Douglas area Sunday.
A man was reportedly threatening people with a knife, attempted to stab an employee and was restrained by staff at around 8 p.m. before being arrested. Police said he had been attempting to use drugs in the shelter and became violent when he was asked to leave.
Nathaniel Sean Capay, 23, was charged with assault and weapons charges and failure to comply with the conditions of an undertaking.
An hour later, police received reports of a man in a state of psychosis, who was believed to be armed, at another South Point Douglas shelter. Officers used a taser on the man, who was carrying bear spray and a substance believed to be methamphetamine, police said.
A 26-year-old man was charged with possession of a weapon and drugs, along with failure to comply with a probation order. He was released on an appearance notice and sent to hospital to be medically assessed.
Also Sunday, an arrest was made and cocaine (with an estimated street value of about $10,000) was seized from a home on the 100 block of Inkster Boulevard.
A search warrant was executed and a 21-year-old man was taken into custody. Body armour was also seized, police said. The man faces possession and trafficking charges.
Hours earlier, a 28-year-old man, who was not being named by police for investigative reasons, was arrested and faces multiple firearms charges after a traffic stop.
Police said they spotted the man known to them as part of a firearms investigation on the 500 block of Magnus Avenue. A loaded revolver was seized after a search of the vehicle, police said.
