The deaths of seven more Manitobans have been linked to complications with COVID-19, the province announced Sunday, bringing the new total to 927.
Three of the deaths occurred in March 2021, while four of the reported deaths occurred between November and February, but due to system delays, were reported over the weekend.
The deaths include two people from the Northern health region; a woman in her 60s and a man in his 80s. In the Winnipeg health region, there was a man in his 70s who died, as well as four women in their 40s, 70s, 80s, and 90s.
Meanwhile, 90 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the province on Sunday.
Forty-one of them were in the Winnipeg health region, 32 in the Northern health region, nine in Prairie Mountain and eight in Southern Health.
There have been no reports of new cases that are variants of concern in the province since March 17.
However, on March 19 Manitoba Health issued a letter to parents at St. Paul’s High School in Winnipeg confirming that “at least one” case of COVID-19 had been traced back to the school and the individual screened positive for a variant of concern. The individual was in the school on March 15. Public health officials did not identify which variant the individual was positive for in the letter to parents.
A spokesperson for the provincial government said Sunday that more information would be available from Dr. Brent Roussin, the province’s chief public health officer, this week during his regular COVID-19 press briefings.
The COVID-19 school dashboard will soon be updated to reflect the latest case, the spokesperson said.
Variants were reported last week at École Taché and O.V. Jewitt Community School in Winnipeg, as well as Pine Ridge Elementary School in Winkler.
Sunday, 135 people were in hospital fighting or recovering from COVID-19. This includes 22 patients in intensive care.
