Initial charges of aggravated assault have been upgraded to second-degree murder in the death of a Winnipeg man shot with a homemade gun.

City police identified the victim Friday as Dexter Cortavista DeJarisco, 31, who suffered life-threatening injuries Jan. 7 during an incident on the 500 block of Burrows Avenue.

A suspect was arrested on Jan. 12, and three days later DeJarisco died in hospital.

Both the victim and suspect were known to police; however, Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Const. Rob Carver wouldn’t disclose what brought the men together almost two weeks ago.

Improvised firearms are becoming more common on Winnipeg streets, he said.

“For some, it’s simpler to talk to someone or go on the internet and hobble one together themselves,” Carver said.

“The guns are unstable and they can blow up in the user’s hand. They’re incredibly dangerous for the user.”

Benny Lance Hansen, 34, of Winnipeg, was charged with second-degree murder following DeJarisco’s death, and remains in custody.
