A weekend party inside a downtown Airbnb rental turned violent, sending two people to hospital with stab wounds.

Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Const. Rob Carver said it’s the first time he’s aware of police responding to an Airbnb site (the website allows people to rent out their homes and apartments directly), but it’s not uncommon for incidents to happen in hotel rooms or other places where parties are held.

“You mix people at a party, you mix booze and or drugs, and there’s a potential for violence,” Carver said. “I don’t think this has anything to do with Airbnb, but (rather) young people with alcohol.”

Officials responded to the incident around 1 a.m. Sunday, inside a suite at 265 Portage Ave. Both people who were stabbed are Winnipeggers under 30; both are listed Monday in stable condition.

Police have identified a 25-year-old male suspect from Winnipeg and issued a warrant for his arrest, but are not naming him.

It’s not clear who rented the room, Carver said. “There was a party, drinks, a very classic situation: there was an argument over a lady.”

Carver said about five people were at the location at the time of the stabbings. Police believe the person being fought over was not among them.

Blood was visible throughout the building Sunday, but Carver said it’s not clear if the altercation was contained in the suite or continued in the hallways.

He said the incident was not linked to a large University of Manitoba Students’ Union gathering at nearby Bell MTS Centre.

Overall, four stabbings and one assault with a weapon were investigated over the weekend — about the usual number, Carver said, despite an overall trend of more random muggings.
