WINNIPEG police were occupied for hours Thursday night after a man with a knife barricaded himself inside a Fort Garry business.
The Winnipeg Police Service received a report of a man in distress and armed with a knife at the Bottle Stop on Plaza Drive, near Pembina Highway, around 3:40 p.m.
Several police cruisers were dispatched to the scene, including the tactical support unit and a crisis negotiation team. The area surrounding the business was cordoned off by police.
A blue truck could be seen abandoned near the store with one of its doors ajar. Around 100 people gathered outside to watch as the standoff continued.
Officers could be heard asking the man to drop the knife and leave the store. The man could reportedly be seen pacing around inside the beer vendor, smoking and drinking.
“We don’t have a timeline right now. We will take as long as we need to bring this to a safe conclusion,” WPS Const. Jay Murray told the Free Press around 7 p.m.
By 7:30 p.m., the incident came to a close after a man was taken into custody following an altercation. He attempted to run from the scene and police appeared to discharge non-lethal ammunition, according to reports.
When asked if the incident was sparked by methamphetamine use, the WPS said it wasn’t clear.
“While we have been communicating with him, it’s just too early to say if this was drug-induced,” Murray said.
Additional details about the incident are expected to be released at a news conference today.
