A local design firm is looking to score your old wooden hockey sticks for a “very Manitoban” sculpture project that will be displayed at The Forks.

The sculptures, which will resemble wooden dandelions, are being built by Winnipeg design firm, Wood Anchor. The company designs and builds furniture, staircases and other projects from reclaimed wood.

The sculptures are part of the $2.5-million renovation of The Forks Market. Jason Neufeld, co-owner of Wood Anchor, said he requires 30 to 40 used wooden hockey sticks to make the sculptures.

BORIS MINKEVICH / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Wood Anchor’s Jason Neufeld needs 30 to 40 hockey sticks to create sculptures for The Forks Market, which is undergoing a renovation.

“Fiberglass hockey sticks are traditionally used now,” Neufeld said. Since Wood Anchor started accepting donations Feb. 22, Neufeld said they’ve received half a dozen sticks.

“A lot of people are donating older sticks,” he said. “Sticks that meant something to their grandpa or were signed by a team… it’s nice to incorporate unique sticks into the project.”

The design of the sculptures will be “inspired by a dandelion that’s gone to seed, or a three-dimensional snowflake,” said Neufeld, who called the design “very Manitoban.”

Neufeld said the goal of the project is to make something that represents Manitoba and the company itself.

Wood Anchor will create new tables and chairs for the market, made of salvaged Manitoba oak and heavy steel, Neufeld said.

Ninety-five per cent of the materials used by Wood Anchor are from Manitoba, he said. “All the trees that we use… were going to be coming down or used for landfill.”

For every stick donated, Wood Anchor will give $5 to Manitoba KidSport.

“What we wanted to do was not only give people an incentive to give sticks, but to show support for local sports and the underprivileged,” he said.

The sculptures will be completed within the next three to four weeks, but won’t immediately be on display.

The deadline for donations is Friday.
