AN ATM was ripped from the front of a Main Street business early Thursday, and dragged up the road before being abandoned, police say.
On Friday, Winnipeg police said officers responded to the 2500 block of Main Street around 3:45 a.m. for the report of a commercial alarm. When they arrived, they found significant damage to the storefront of a business.
Investigators believe a suspect reversed a stolen vehicle into the storefront, then connected the ATM to the vehicle using a chain, before dragging it off of the property.
The ATM was located shortly after on the 3000 block of Main Street, after police believe it became detached. An unoccupied stolen vehicle, believed to have been used during the incident, was retrieved on the 100 block of Meadowcrest Bay.
“For the city of Winnipeg, it’s a pretty rare occurrence,” police spokesman Const. Claude Chancy said.
“It is unlike what we see in the eastern provinces, where there have been a lot more occurrences of this type, where people do make the attempt to steal ATMs and take them forcibly from any business or locale.”
No injuries were reported.
“Thankfully, it was done in the very early hours of the morning, so there was nobody around. There are no injuries to any bystander or anyone that may be at that locale,” Chancy said.
An area resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said the robbery attempt was confusing.
“It’s like something you see in a movie or on TV. I don’t know why they thought that plan would work.”
The incident remains under investigation.
