A strike at Manitoba Safeway stores has been averted after a tentative agreement was reached hours before the contract expired for almost 2,200 workers.
The bargaining committee of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Local 832, reached an agreement on Saturday just hours before the contract expired at midnight. The current contract will continue until the new contract is ratified.
The union is not releasing details of the tentative agreement until workers get a chance to look at it next Sunday. The bargaining committee is recommending that workers accept the agreement.
“This round of bargaining was unlike any other I’ve ever had in my years here at Local 832,” Jeff Traeger, the union’s president, said in a statement.
“I want to give thanks to our membership for giving us our 98 per cent strike mandate which helped to move the company off of many of their major concessions.”
Last month, the union broke off contract negotiations with Sobeys West Inc., after the company threatened to close grocery stores unless the workers agreed to cuts.
“It’s like bargaining with a gun to your head,” Traeger said at the time.
There are 23 Safeway stores in Manitoba, including 18 in Winnipeg.
