A 44-year-old man is facing numerous charges after a 12-year-old boy was allegedly abducted from a Main Street bus stop, taken to an Osborne Village home and sexually assaulted.

Officers responded to a report of an abduction and sex assault on Saturday in the early evening, Winnipeg police said Monday.

The initial report indicated the boy was waiting at a Main Street bus stop near The Forks when a man he didn’t know offered him candy, police said.

When the boy refused, the stranger took hold of his arm and walked him forcefully to a residence on the 400 block of Stradbrook Avenue.

The victim was given alcohol to drink, threatened verbally and sexually assaulted, according to police. The boy escaped when the suspect fell asleep.

Police were called and the victim was taken to hospital in stable condition.

The Winnipeg police child abuse unit later arrested a suspect at the residence where the boy was allegedly assaulted.

Paramvir Singh Saini, 44, was charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, kidnapping, mischief under $5,000, uttering threats and violating the liquor control act. He is in custody.

A Free Press review of court records indicates Saini has never before been convicted of a criminal offence in Manitoba.

This is not the first sexual assault of a child near a Winnipeg bus stop recently.

On March 8, Winnipeg police were called for a report of a 16-year-old boy being sexually assaulted in Inkster Gardens.

The teen had left a bus stop near Old Commonwealth Path and Doctor Jose Rizal Way that evening when a man he didn’t know struck up an “inappropriate conversation” and repeatedly fondled him, police said at the time.

Sex crimes investigators identified a suspect and arrested him on March 28.

Derrick Marco Ross, 33, of Winnipeg, was charged with sexual assault and four counts of failing to comply with conditions of a release order. He was detained in custody.
