A 13-year-old hockey player from Grandview died in a car crash Sunday on his way to watch a championship game.

Brock Pulock was in a car with three relatives and a friend when it rolled about five kilometres south of Minnedosa.

The Grade 7 student and team captain of the peewee Grand Plains Hawks was known for leading others, like when he shaved his head for cancer research.

"It’s devastating," said Darren Grasby, a friend who was helping the family Monday at their home in Grandview, north of Riding Mountain National Park.

Police said that around 1 p.m. Sunday, a 2004 Ford Explorer was heading south on Highway 10 near Minnedosa when the driver lost control and it went into a ditch. Police said two teenage boys were thrown from the car, and that they may not have been wearing seatbelts. They were taken to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, where Brock died early Monday.

The other teenager was in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, said police. The driver and front passenger were not injured, and a third teenager was treated and released at hospital.

Police said alcohol and speed were not factors.

The boy’s mother, Tannis Pulock, is principal of Grandview School, said residents.

Grasby said Brock, a tall boy with a gentle touch, was admired for being kind to others.

Residents said the family is well-known in the community for the three hockey-playing brothers.

Derrick Pulock and Ryan Pulock play for the Grandview Comets, and Ryan was recently drafted by the Brandon Wheat Kings.
