A Free Press reporter has been nominated for a national award for a pair of stories that detail the devastating impact of Canada’s residential schools.
Ryan Thorpe has been nominated for the Canadian Association of Journalists’ APTN/CAJ Reconciliation Award for a pair of stories, Genocide on the Prairies and Sagkeeng’s Scars.
In the former, Thorpe explored the history of young Indigenous students being sent to residential schools and how many never came back and are buried in unmarked graves. In the latter, Thorpe looked at the lasting legacy of colonization on one Manitoba First Nation.
Other reporters who were nominated write for the Globe and Mail, CBC, Global News and Radio-Canada.
The winner will be announced next month at an awards ceremony in Montreal.
