Manitoba RCMP found two people dead from exposure within a four-hour period Saturday; one in Selkirk, the other in Gillam.

The Mounties were called to a walking trail in Selkirk Park at 11:40 a.m. Saturday after receiving a report of an unresponsive man at the location.

Officers and emergency services responded and found a 52-year-old man from Selkirk dead.

“I don’t think he was there too long. There was either a person or a couple walking along this trail and they came across him,” Manitoba RCMP spokesman Sgt. Paul Manaigre said.

The temperature in the area at the time was about -10 C.

Hours later, at 3 p.m., Gillam RCMP received a report of an unresponsive woman in Gilliam, in an open area off of Butnau Road, near the baseball diamonds.

Upon arrival, officers found the body of a 48-year-old woman from Fox Lake Cree Nation. The temperature at the time was about -18 C.

“Obviously, that’s not far from Gillam, but we’re not sure if she was just in town for a few days or perhaps living somewhere in the community. Those are avenues we’re looking into,” Manaigre said.

It’s unclear whether either individual, or both, were homeless, but RCMP said that will form part of the investigation.

Manaigre said the Mounties usually see deaths from exposure every winter, but that it’s unusual to have two such deaths on the same day.

“We usually get a couple, one or two, a winter. To have two in one day, that’s a little unusual. I hope it’s not a trend. It’s colder, but we’re not in the deep freeze right now. So I just hope this isn’t a concerning trend developing,” Manaigre said.

While neither death is considered criminal in nature, the investigations continue and autopsies will be done.
