The University of Winnipeg has issued a statement about one of its former instructors, who is reportedly being investigated for alleged sexual misconduct at Concordia University.

Jon Paul Fiorentino was on contract at the U of W in 2003, teaching at its Centre for Academic Writing, according to the university.

(According to Fiorentino’s online resumé, he taught academic writing at the Manitoba school from September 2003 to April 2004.)

Fiorentino also studied at the U of W in the 1990s, but did not graduate from the school, moving on to Concordia in Montreal afterward.

“In light of recent allegations of sexual misconduct by Fiorentino while employed at Concordia University, we encourage anyone from the UWinnipeg community with concerns, including alumni, to get in touch with our human rights and diversity office at 204-988-7508 or s.belding@uwinnipeg.ca,” says a statement on the school’s website.

“The University of Winnipeg strives to provide a safe and respectful working and learning environment for students, staff, and faculty. Misconduct of any kind is not tolerated on our campus.”

Fiorentino is one of at least two professors being investigated for alleged sexual misconduct at Concordia, according to a CBC report.

The Montreal university launched a third-party investigation after allegations of inappropriate relationships between professors and students, and predatory behaviour, surfaced online.

In an interview Thursday, Concordia spokesperson Mary-Jo Barr would not confirm whether Fiorentino was one of two men at the centre of the misconduct investigation. She did say he and Montreal-based writer David McGimpsey were no longer teaching classes.

Fiorentino has not responded to a Free Press interview request.

He grew up in Transcona before moving to Montreal. According to his online resumé, he has written nine books, won numerous prizes and been reviewed by outlets across Canada, including the Free Press.
