The University of Winnipeg has appointed Barb Gamey as the school’s new ceremonial head.

The local business leader will take on the honorary title of chancellor to succeed Bob Silver, the university announced Tuesday.

Gamey is the co-founder of Payworks and co-chair of the premier’s enterprise team. She also sits on the Business Council of Manitoba’s education committee. Her recent feats include working with Manitoba’s post-secondary institutions to develop the Horizon Manitoba report and delivering the Growing Manitoba’s Economy report in 2019, alongside Dave Angus.

Her new role will involve attending convocations to confer degrees to graduating students.

In a release, university president Annette Trimbee called Gamey a “community champion and private-sector leader” who understands the ways in which education can transform lives.”

For her part, Gamey said in a prepared statement she was looking forward to taking on the role.

“My recent engagement in the community has given me a renewed awareness of the critical role the University of Winnipeg plays as a dynamic education facility in the heart of our city.”

It was made public in September that Silver, a co-owner of the Winnipeg Free Press, planned to hang up his ceremonial gown after more than a decade in the position.

During his three terms as chancellor, Silver championed the creation of the opportunity fund. The fund offers support to prospective U of W students who are Indigenous, inner-city residents, new Canadians and refugees.
