Winnipeg’s homeless had one last sleep at 1JustCity’s emergency warming centre on Sunday night.
After having almost 2,700 sleeps during its regular January to March season — and then adding another 1,400 safe social-distancing sleeps for the last two months because of the pandemic — the organization located inside Augustine United Church is closing for the year.
In a news release, executive director Tessa Blaikie Whitecloud said its January to March period was already the emergency warming centre’s busiest of the organization’s four seasons in operation and it was frequently at capacity.
The organization says it is looking forward to next year when, with Oak Table, another member charity, it is developing a new space inside the church that will allow the homeless who stay there to have access to showers, laundry and washrooms.
