What’s open, what’s closed on Christmas

EVEN though it finally looks like Christmas outside, Manitobans will celebrate the holiday differently this year.

The province remains under code red restrictions on Christmas Day, meaning people must only gather with household members and keep outdoor groups to a maximum of five people. While Boxing Day sales will go ahead, the ban on selling non-essential items will still be in effect Saturday.

Many businesses and government services change their hours over Christmas and Boxing Day.

COVID-19 test sites

Most COVID-19 testing sites will be open for regular or reduced hours on Christmas and Boxing Day. The MPI drive-thru sites at 1284 Main St. and 125 King Edward St., the drive-thru site at 1066 Nairn Ave., the 2735 Pembina Hwy. site, the 604 St. Mary’s Rd. site, and the walk-in testing sites at 1 Research Rd., Assiniboia Downs and the Garrick Centre will be open regular hours on both days.

The Dakota Medical Centre will be closed Dec. 24 and 25, and will reopen at regular hours Dec. 26. The Minor Illness and Injury Clinic at 2055 Notre Dame Avenue will be open 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Dec. 24, noon to 3 p.m. Dec. 25, and noon to 3 p.m. Dec. 26.

The Thunderbird House testing site will be closed from Dec. 25 to 28.

Shopping

Most malls will be closed Friday. On Boxing Day, Polo Park will open 10 a.m.-7 p.m., St. Vital Centre will open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Grant Park Shopping Centre will open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Kildonan Place will open 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

Tenants at the Forks Market will be closed Friday.

Most grocery stores, including Safeway, Sobeys, Superstore and Walmart, will reman closed Friday.

Manitoba Liquor Mart stores in Winnipeg will be closed Friday. For details on exceptions and rural Liquor Mart hours, visit www.LiquorMarts.ca/hours.

Beer vendors and private wine stores set their own holiday hours, so Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries suggests the best way to find out if the one near you will be open is to call the outlet.

 

Entertainment

The Assiniboine Park Zoo is temporarily closed.

The Manitoba Museum is temporarily closed.

The Children’s Museum is temporarily closed.

The Winnipeg Art Gallery is temporarily closed.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is temporarily closed.

Movie theatres are temporarily closed.

 

Recycling and trash

Recycling and garbage will not be collected on Friday. If your collection day is Friday, put your carts out on Saturday.

The Brady Road landfill is closed Friday.

 

Leisure activities

All leisure centres are temporarily closed.

City of Winnipeg swimming pools are temporarily closed.

 

Winnipeg Transit

On Friday, buses will operate on a Sunday schedule.

Libraries

All Winnipeg Public Library branches are closed to the public. Holds pickup service is also closed Friday.

Cemeteries

Brookside, St. Vital and Transcona cemetery grounds are open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Cemetery offices will be closed on the holiday.

Government services

Civic, provincial and federal offices are closed Friday.

The Winnipeg Parking Authority is temporarily closed to the public.

The Winnipeg Animal Services Agency is closed Friday and Saturday.

There is no mail delivery on Friday and Saturday. Canada Post offices are closed, but post offices operated by the private sector will be open according to the hours of service of the host business.
