Crews respond to house fire on Redwood Avenue

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to the 300 block of Redwood Avenue for a report of a house fire Monday.
When crews arrived shortly after 4 a.m., the two-storey home had smoke and flames coming from it. The fire was extinguished about half an hour later.
The fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported.
NDPs choose Carla Compton as Tuxedo byelection candidate

The New Democrats have chosen Carla Compton to run for MLA in the Tuxedo riding’s byelection.
The seat left vacant by former premier Heather Stefanson will be filled by June 18, Premier Wab Kinew announced at a news conference Monday afternoon.
Tuxedo has been a Progressive Conservative stronghold since its inception in 1981.
Compton, a registered nurse, ran in the Tuxedo riding in the 2019 provincial election.
Election day is June 18. Advance voting will be between June 8 and June 15.

The fate of the Manitoba legislature seat formerly held by Heather Stefanson will be decided June 18.
The Tuxedo seat became vacant May 6 following Stefanson’s resignation.
There are currently 34 New Democrats, 21 Progressive Conservatives, one independent Liberal and one vacant seat in the legislature.

Pedestrian dies after collision Sunday

An adult female pedestrian has died after a collision with a vehicle Sunday.
Winnipeg police say they were called to the area of Portage Avenue and Woodhaven Boulevard around 10:45 p.m. The eastbound lanes of Portage Avenue were subsequently closed between Sturgeon Road and Ronald Street.
Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was also on scene and transported the woman to hospital in critical condition where she later succumbed to her injuries.
The driver remained on scene and spoke with investigators, say police.
