Police search for missing teen

Winnipeg police are looking for a 14-year-old girl.

Police issued an alert Wednesday about Cherrayea Meeches.

Meeches was last seen on May 19, in the St. James industrial area, and hasn’t been heard from since then.

She is known to frequent the North End, central area of the city and East Kildonan.

She’s is described as 5-1 in height with a thin build, medium length black hair, and brown eyes.

Police ask the public to contact the missing persons (204-986-6250) unit if they know her whereabouts.

No foul play suspected in death of Winnipeg woman

RCMP have ruled out foul play in the death of a Winnipeg woman whose body was pulled from a pond in the Molson area Tuesday.

An autopsy confirmed the identity of Brittany Storey, 29, and determined she died when her vehicle entered the water. No foul play is suspected, RCMP said in a news release Wednesday.

Whitemouth RCMP removed a vehicle from a pond Tuesday after finding tire tracks leading to the site.

Storey was reported missing in the Rennie area on June 6. She was on a group call with friends, driving home around 4:10 p.m. when she told them she had struck a tree. Soon after, the call cut out. She could not be reached after that.

The search in Molson, about 70 kilometres from Storey’s last known whereabouts in Rennie, began Sunday.

RCMP said the family has been notified and they are asking for privacy.

Drugs, other items seized at Stony Mountain prison

Corrections officers seized contraband items with an estimated prison value of more than $400,000 at Stony Mountain Institution on Monday.

A package containing cocaine, cannabis concentrate and tobacco was seized on the perimeter of the medium-security unit.

Police have been notified, and the prison is also investigating, the Correctional Service of Canada said in a news release Wednesday.

Early morning apartment fire extinguished

Crews extinguished a fire in an apartment building in the River-Osborne area early Wednesday.

Firefighters were sent to the three-storey building on the 100 block of Mayfair Avenue at 6:06 a.m. and brought it under control at 6:25 a.m., the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a news release.

Crews temporarily evacuated some residents from their suites. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Oliveira ruled out vs. Redblacks

Already down star receiver Kenny Lawler, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will be without running back Brady Oliveira for their Week 2 game in Ottawa against the Redblacks.

Oliveira, who suffered an injury in a Week 1 loss to Montreal, was left off the depth chart Wednesday morning. Johnny Augustine will earn the start.

Lawler suffered a fractured arm and has been placed on the six-game injured list. Oliveira is on the one-game injured list.
