Jets down Panthers 6-3

The Winnipeg Jets have snapped their two game losing streak with a 6-3 victory over the Florida Panthers.

Mark Scheifele recorded a hat trick, Morgan Barron scored twice into an empty net with his team shorthanded and Kyle Connor had the other tally as Winnipeg improves to an NHL-best 16-3-0 on the year.

Florida falls to 12-6-1.

Winnipeg now hits the road for six straight games starting Friday night in Pittsburgh.

Bob Odenkirk doing standup show for charity

American actor-comedian Bob Odenkirk, who has been in Winnipeg shooting back-to-back films (Nobody 2 and Normal), announced on Instagram today that he will be doing an improv show with Kids in the Hall star Kevin McDonald on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. with all proceeds going to Dream Factory, Art City and Harvest Manitoba.

The Better Call Saul star, who also created the HBO sketch comedy series Mr. Show with David Cross, posted, “After 3 features shot here, I want to thank Winnipeg for the hospitality and good times.”

The show will take place on the second floor of Hargrave St. Market, and will feature performances by local bluegrass band the Stanley County Cut-Ups.

Tickets are $50 for standing, $75 for seated and $200 for a VIP reception with Odenkirk and McDonald. They can be purchased at mottolagrocery.com.

Sarah McLachlan cancels postponed arena show

Citing ongoing vocal issues, Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan has cancelled her Fumbling Towards Ecstasy Tour.

The tour, which was supposed to come to Canada Life Centre last week, had previously been postponed. It was intended to celebrate the 30th anniversary of McLachlan’s third studio album.

In a statement, the singer said, “My voice is not recovering as it should and, on the advice of an ENT specialist, I will need an undetermined amount of vocal rest to fully recover and avoid risking permanent damage to my vocal cords.”

Ticket purchases will automatically be refunded to the method of payment used.

Police searching for missing Flin Flon man

RCMP are searching for a missing Flin Flon man.

William Peter Michel, 36, was last seen at the Flin Flon Aboriginal Friendship Centre sometime in mid- to late October and has not contacted family members since. He was reported missing to police at noon on Nov. 13.

It’s believed he might be in the areas of Flin Flon, The Pas or Pelican Narrows, Sask.

RCMP are asking anyone with information on Michel’s whereabouts to contact their officers at 204-687-1422, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online.

Suspects sought in Thompson shooting

RCMP are searching for four suspects after a man was shot in Thompson.

The incident happened at an apartment complex on Ashberry Place at about 6:15 a.m. Saturday. Officers had already been sent to the northern city’s hospital after a 25-year-old man from South Indian Lake arrived there suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

He was last reported to be in stable condition, RCMP said Tuesday.

An investigation has determined four suspects, all known to police, were involved, RCMP said. One, armed with a shotgun, waited for the victim to leave his apartment before opening fire.

Gage Hornan, 33, Dallas Spence, 30, Edward Francois, 26, and Archie Spence, 19, have been charged with firearm-related offences and aggravated assault.

Warrants of arrest have been issued for all four. RCMP asked anyone with information on their whereabouts to contact the Thompson detachment at 204-677-6909/6911, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or manitobacrimestoppers.com.

Jets send Heinola to Moose for quick conditioning stint

Ville Heinola is gone — but not for long.

The Winnipeg Jets have sent the young defenceman down to the Manitoba Moose on a conditioning assignment as he works his way back from an ankle surgery he had during training camp.

The plan is for Heinola to play two games with the AHL club this week — on Thursday morning and Saturday afternoon at Canada Life Centre — and then rejoin the Jets in time for next Monday’s game in Minnesota.

Heinola broke his ankle during camp last year and never played a game with the Jets, spending two months on the shelf recovering and then playing 41 games with the Moose.

He is no longer exempt from waivers and was certain to make the big club this year, but he suffered an infection in his surgically repaired ankle, which required a second medical procedure.

Arrest in Alexander Avenue homicide

A man who was already in jail has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder after a recent homicide.

Naustin William Beardy, 21, of Winnipeg was arrested at the Winnipeg Remand Centre — where he was in custody for an unrelated matter — on Monday.

The Winnipeg Police Service previously said Jamal Eli Preston Miles, a Winnipeg resident and member of Shamattawa First Nation, was fatally injured after an argument involving several people escalated.

Police were sent to the 500 block of Alexander Avenue the night of Nov. 9. Miles, 23, was pronounced dead in hospital.

Man beaten, robbed after expecting to meet woman: police

A 50-year-old man who went to a Tuxedo home after arranging a meeting with a woman ended up being beaten and robbed while held against his will, police say.

Two men threatened, forcibly confined and assaulted the victim when he arrived at the home on the 100 block of Tuxedo Avenue in the early hours of Nov. 12, Winnipeg police said.

His belongings and vehicle were stolen by a woman and a third man.

The victim was then driven to a store on the 500 block of Selkirk Avenue and forced to make a cash-back purchase for the suspects, who let him go on the 100 block of Salter Street.

The man called police from the 400 block of Burrows Avenue at about 7 a.m.

Police said the major crimes unit and tactical support team arrested four suspects when officers raided the Tuxedo home Sunday.

The victim and suspects did not know each other, police said.

Police would not say why or how the victim arranged the meeting with a woman, nor how long he was held against his will.

Three men, two aged 27 and one aged 23, and a 27-year-old woman are charged with robbery and forcible confinement. One of the men is also charged with uttering threats.

Vacant Church Avenue commercial building destroyed in fire

A vacant building on Church Avenue is “expected to be a total loss” after a fire early Tuesday.

Firefighters were sent to the commercial building on Church’s 300 block at 4:49 a.m. and used aerial ladder trucks to blast water onto the fire, which was declared under control just before 6 a.m.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews evacuated a neighbouring home as a precaution.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Man armed with knife at U of M campus

Winnipeg police are warning the public to avoid the Allen Building at the University of Manitoba campus on Tuesday morning after receiving reports of a man armed with a knife.

The building is located at 30 Sifton Rd. Police posted on X shortly after 7:30 a.m. that there was a large police presence there and asked the public to avoid the area.
