City man accused of erratic driving with a suspended licence while impaired

12:43 PM

City police have charged a 42-year-old man accused of “driving erratically” while impaired with a suspended licence and assaulting another man on Christmas Day.

Emergency responders attended the intersection of Buchanan Boulevard and Fairlane Street around 4 p.m. on Wednesday after receiving a report about an assault with a weapon involving an erratic driver in the Crestview area.

Upon arrival, general patrol members found a 32-year-old victim and learned he was attacked by a motorist who had gotten into a dispute with an adult female passenger prior to the confrontation, per a news release issued by the Winnipeg Police Service.

“The female passenger exited the vehicle near the above location, prompting the victim to stop and check on her well-being. The suspect produced a baseball bat, swung it at the victim, and threatened to kill him,” police said, adding that officers located the vehicle a short time later, identified the driver and took him into custody.

WPS said the victim was not injured during the assault.

A 42-year-old man from Winnipeg has been charged with assault with a weapon, uttering threats, operating a vehicle while impaired and driving with a suspended licence. He was released on an undertaking.

Teenager facing charges in Christmas Day home invasion

12:30 PM

A 19-year-old man from Winnipeg is facing charges in connection to a violent home invasion that took place in the early hours of the morning on Christmas Day.

The Winnipeg Police Service said officers responded to a break-and-enter in the 1700 block of St. Mary’s Rd. around 3 a.m. on Wednesday and located an injured 36-year-old man who had been attacked with “an edged weapon.”

The suspect fled the townhouse in the St. Vital area before emergency responders arrived on the scene, police said. In an update provided Thursday, WPS announced police had arrested a teenager a short distance away during a secondary incident and turned him over to investigators who allege he executed the home invasion.

Jonathon Yetman-Levasseur, 19, has been charged with breaking and entering, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon and failure to comply with condition of undertaking. He was detained in custody.

The lone victim — who was initially transported to hospital with serious injuries— was upgraded to stable.

Firefighters tackle blaze on Main Street

9:45 AM

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called for reports of a fire on the 900 block of Main Street this morning.

When they arrived at the single-storey commercial building after 2:30 a.m., heavy smoke and flames were coming from the structure.

The fire was declared under control at 4:48 a.m. and no occupants were found in the building. One firefighter was injured and taken to hospital in stable condition.

Residents are being asked to proceed with caution in the area, as water used to extinguish the fire is creating slippery conditions.

The fire is being investigated.
