Hanover man dies after skid-steer loader falls through ice

1:11 PM

A 58-year-old man has died after the skid steer-loader he was operating on a pond in the rural municipality of Hanover fell through the ice on Christmas Eve.

Steinbach RCMP, local fire crews, and emergency medical services were called to the address at around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Hutterian Emergency Aquatic Response Team, a group that holds dives to find drowning victims, came to the scene and recovered the man’s body later that afternoon.

Steinbach RCMP are investigating.

Thompson man arrested for firing gun in hospital chapel

12:28 PM

A man is facing weapons charges after a gun was fired inside the Thompson hospital’s chapel on Christmas Eve.

Mounties were sent to Thompson General Hospital at about 4 p.m. after a gun was fired there. Officers found hospital security guards had detained a man, RCMP said in a news release Friday.

Officers later found a bullet hole in a window of the chapel and ammunition on the floor. No one was hurt, and officers seized a gun.

Russell Hyslop, 33, was arrested and charged with a slew of weapons offences, including discharging a firearm while being reckless, mischief under $5,000, careless use of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a restricted firearm, pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon contrary to an order and possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes.

He was remanded into custody.

Pedestrian dies, driver flees after Poplar River collision

11:14 AM

RCMP are asking for witnesses to come forward after a man was found dead on a road early Thursday.

Police were sent to Southside Road in Poplar River First Nation at 2:20 a.m. A 43-year-old area man, who appeared to have been struck by a vehicle, was declared dead at the scene. The driver was gone before police arrived.

RCMP asked anyone who might have witnessed the collision or has any other information about the incident to contact the Poplar River detachment at 204-244-2745, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or manitobacrimestoppers.com.

Fires cause emergency demolition, send two to hospital

8:55 AM

Two fires broke out in Winnipeg within less than an hour Thursday evening.

A vacant and boarded-up home on the 400 block of Pritchard Avenue caught fire at about 6:07 p.m. Thursday, resulting in the evacuation of a neighbouring home as crews worked overnight to extinguish the fire. There were no injuries.

The Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service was planning an emergency demolition of the home Friday because the structural integrity of the building, which had previously had a fire in June, has been compromised.

At 6:43 p.m., firefighters were sent to a home on the 400 block of Agnes Street. Two residents were taken to hospital in stable condition after that fire.

The Agnes Street fire was deemed under control at 7:48 p.m.

The causes of the fires are under investigation.
