The City of Winnipeg posted on social media that the vehicle has been cleared from the roadway by about 4 p.m.

Man fatally shot by RCMP in Dominion City

3:53 PM

A man has died after he was shot by an RCMP officer outside a home in Dominion City on Tuesday morning.

Morris RCMP were sent to the home “for a wellness call” at about 8:31 a.m. While waiting for backup, the first officer there was confronted by a man who exited a garage on the property with a metal object in his hand and advanced towards the officer, RCMP said in a news release.

“Despite repeated commands to stop and drop the weapon, the male continued towards the officer, who then discharged his firearm,” the release said.

The officer gave the man CPR until emergency crews arrived. The 33-year-old man was then transported to hospital in critical condition by the STARS medical helicopter, where he later died from his injuries.

The officer was not hurt.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba asked witnesses or anyone with information or video that might help the police watchdog to call 1-844-667-6060.

Steinbach high school evacuated after bomb threat

1:48 PM

RCMP say a 16-year-old boy is a suspect after Steinbach Regional Secondary School was evacuated because of a bomb threat Thursday.

Police, including a canine unit, and firefighters were sent to the high school — one of the largest in the province, with roughly 2,000 students — shortly after 10:30 a.m.

Officers learned an unknown male had called from a payphone with the threat, RCMP said in an afternoon news release. No suspicious devices were found inside the building.

The Hanover School Division informed parents about the threat in an email.

“Students are being released to return home. Any student belongings will be secured in the building. Entry to the school will not be permitted until RCMP have given clearance to do so,” superintendent Joe Thiessen wrote in an email to families earlier Tuesday.

Residents were asked to avoid the area.

Man charged in Thompson stabbing, assault

1:42 PM

A man has been charged after he allegedly stabbed someone and assaulted a police officer in Thompson.

Officers were sent to a home on Brandon Crescent at about 6:15 p.m. Saturday and found a 49-year-old man who had suffered “a minor stab wound” and a 45-year-old woman who had been assaulted, RCMP said Tuesday.

The woman also suffered minor injuries, police said, and both victims were treated in hospital.

The suspect resisted arrest, police said, and was involved in a physical altercation with one of the officers.

Both victims were known to the 22-year-old Thompson man who was arrested, police said.

He has been charged with nearly 20 offences, including three counts of assaulting a police officer and one count of disarming a police officer.

Girl, 12, killed in Gods Lake Narrows snowmobile incident

1:15 PM

A girl is dead after a snowmobile collision Friday night.

Gods Lake Narrows RCMP were contacted about the incident near the community at about 8 p.m.

Police said a 12-year-old girl was thrown from a toboggan she was on with two other kids, also 12 years old, that was being pulled by a snowmobile. A 12-year-old boy was driving the snowmobile, with a 14-year-old passenger on it.

RCMP believe the toboggan hit a tree stump on a riding path, causing the crash. The girl who was thrown suffered life-threatening injuries.

The driver went to the local nursing station for help, and a medical van was sent to pick up the victim to take her to the station, where she died.

None of the children were wearing helmets, RCMP said in a news release Tuesday.

Former Tory MLA and cabinet minister Janice Morley-Lecomte will be facing off against the country’s sports minister in the upcoming federal election.

Morley-Lecomte, who was mental health and community wellness minister for nine months in the Stefanson government before losing her Seine River seat in the last election, has been chosen to run for the Conservative party in the Winnipeg South riding.

That riding has been held by Liberal MP Terry Duguid, who was recently appointed sports minister and the minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada, since 2015.

The Barr Brothers, Corb Lund, Leif Vollebekk, Jill Barber, Roman Clarke, Ami Cheon and Al Simmons are among the musicians that will taking the stage at the 2025 edition of Festival du Voyageur, which runs Feb. 14 to 23 at Whittier Park.

A few new attractions for all ages will be on offer at this year’s fest, including L’shed à Léo, an exhibition of objects and photos that mascot Léo la Tuque keeps in his shed from festivals of yesteryear, as well as interactive self-guided activity tours of Fort Gibraltar, a new outdoor lounge, a beverage shack, information panels on maple syrup production and a daytime ice sculpting workshop. Also new this year: the option to purchase weekend passes.

And, for the first time since winter 2023, snow sculptures will part of the cityscape in the weeks leading up to the festival. Last year’s event looked a little different owing to unseasonably warm temperatures and little snow on the ground.
