Highway 6 reopened after crash
7:03 PM
A stretch of Manitoba highway was closed for a couple of hours Saturday as emergency responders worked to clear the scene of a collision.
Traffic was halted in all directions on Highway 6, from Fairford to Hilbre, from around 4:42 to 7 p.m. A provincial advisory said the closure was the result of a crash.
No other details were included in the release.
Numerous motorists traveling on Highway 6 fell victim to collisions last year, including three who were killed and six others who were injured in a two-week span over the summer.
The highway extends between Thompson and the Perimeter Highway on Winnipeg’s outskirts. Saturday’s collision occurred on a portion of the highway around 210 kilometres north of the capital city.
The Safer Highway 6 Citizens Advisory Group has called for improvements, including more passing lanes, rest stops, and wider shoulders on the northern part of the route.

Drugs, forged document seized from ‘suspicious’ man
11:06 AM
Police intuition has resulted in charges against a Winnipeg man, after an officer spotted the “suspicious male” inside a Weston neighbourhood apartment building.
Officers went to the building, located in the 300 block of Blake Street, around 11:45 a.m. on Thursday in pursuit of an unrelated investigation, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release.
They found the man in a common area of the apartment complex and “observed the male reaching into his pockets and directed him to stop.”
“The male ignored officer’s directions and was handcuffed and searched for officer safety,” police said.
Police seized more than an ounce of methamphetamine, 78 grams of fentanyl, $860 in cash and a knife. The suspect attempted to conceal his real name by providing officers with a forged identification document, WPS said.
Rex James Smith, 40, is facing a slate of charges related to drug trafficking and possessing a forged document. He was also wanted on multiple warrants, police said.
High-speed pursuit ends in downtown crash
10:47 AM
A Winnipeg man is in police custody after a high-speed pursuit ended with a stolen vehicle striking a building downtown.
The chase began shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday, when a patrolling police unit spotted a 2010 Acura MDX travelling eastbound on McDermot Avenue, toward Arlington Street, with a lone man behind the wheel, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release.
Officers began following the SUV, which had been taken from a parking lot in the 900 block of Notre Dame Avenue on Thursday, police said.
The vehicle fled southbound on Arlington, striking a light standard as it went. The SUV then rammed a police vehicle and took off again at high speed. The driver lost control a short distance away and struck a commercial building in the 900 block of Notre Dame, causing about $30,000 in damages, WPS said.
A man attempted to flee on foot, but was quickly arrested.
An 18-year-old man is charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. He is also facing four counts for failing to comply with a sentence, and was wanted on an arrest warrant.
