New fire-paramedic station in Windsor Park opens tonight

3:02 PM

Fire and paramedic crews will begin responding to emergencies out of a new station in Windsor Park on Wednesday night.

The station, at 1083 Autumnwood Dr., is the base for a fire engine and crew, a rescue unit and the hazardous materials response team, a paramedic crew and ambulance, and a fire investigator, the City of Winnipeg said in a news release.

The station was built on the same site as the old Windsor Park station and that of the former Windsor Park Library but has additional bay space to house more crews. The station at 864 Marion St. will be closed and its crews reassigned.

A commissioning ceremony and public open house is planned for later this spring.

New information narrows search for answers in homicide case: RCMP

11:55 AM

Manitoba RCMP believe they are closing in on answers in a long-standing homicide case after new information has brought “forward momentum” to the investigation.

Melinda Lynxleg, 40, went missing on March 31, 2020. Police determined she died by homicide after her body was found at an abandoned property in San Clara on June 7, 2023.

The rural community is about 350 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.

“For the past five years, RCMP major crime services, with assistance of the Roblin RCMP, have been working tirelessly to find answers for Melinda’s family,” RCMP said in a news release Wednesday.

“Thousands of hours have been spent looking for answers, including a complete review of the entire investigation, which recently led to new information coming to light. This development has given the investigation forward momentum, and officers are confident they’re even closer to finding answers for the Lynxleg family.”

Police did not disclose details about the new information. They asked anybody with information about the investigation to call the RCMP tip line at 1-431-489-8042.

Man shot is city’s latest homicide victim

11:41 AM

Police are investigating after a man was fatally shot early Tuesday.

Officers were sent to the 400 block of Agnes Street at about 12:55 a.m., found the man and gave him first aid before emergency crews arrived.

He was transported to hospital in critical condition and later died.

The Winnipeg Police Service identified the man in a news release Wednesday as 30-year-old Brenton Sean Paul Harper, a Garden Hill First Nation member who lived in Winnipeg.

Police asked anyone with relevant information or video to contact its homicide unit at 204-986-6508, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or online.
