Jets fall 4-1 to Utah HC

8:54 PM

SALT LAKE CITY — The Winnipeg Jets wrapped up a three-game road trip on Saturday night with a 4-1 loss to the Utah HC.

Mark Scheifele scored the lone goal for the visitors, who had a golden opportunity to gain ground in the race for the top spot in the Central Division after Dallas lost earlier in the day.

It was the 800th point of Scheifele’s career.

Utah raced out to a 2-0 lead by early in the second period courtesy of a pair of power-play goals. They extended it to 3-0 before the middle frame was done, then thwarted any hopes of a Winnipeg comeback with an empty-net goal.

The Jets were coming off an impressive 4-0 win in Vegas. They are now 52-21-4 and remain four points ahead of the Stars, who have one game in hand.

Winnipeg returns to action on Monday when they host the St. Louis Blues at Canada Life Centre.

Man, 24, facing charges after carjacking

5:14 PM

A 24-year-old Winnipeg man is facing charges after a man was randomly attacked and his vehicle stolen Friday night.

In a news release Saturday, Winnipeg police said a 25-year-old man was attacked in the 100 block of Keewatin Street around 7 p.m. before a suspect stole his 2019 Honda Civic.

Officers received reports that the stolen Civic had collided with another vehicle on St. Matthews Avenue, between Strathcona and Ashburn streets. The suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, police said.

The suspect was arrested in the 1300 block of St. Matthews.

The 24-year-old man is facing a variety of charges. He was released on an undertaking.

Police charge man with animal cruelty

1:03 PM

A Winnipeg man is facing an animal cruelty charge after police received reports of two dogs being mistreated on a downtown street Friday.

At about 1:50 p.m., officers were called to the 300 block of Edmonton Street after receiving a report a man was “repeatedly and violently” pulling one of the dog’s leashes, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Saturday.

Police located the suspect at a nearby apartment and he was taken into custody, police said. The two dogs were found in the suite and turned over to the city’s Animal Services branch.

A 20-year-old man faces charges of animal cruelty and failing to comply with a release order. He was released from custody on the condition he not possess animals.

His name was not released.
