Jets blasted by Blues, series tied 2-2

2:59 PM

ST. LOUIS — The Winnipeg Jets are limping home from St. Louis after a second straight lopsided defeat that has turned their best-of-seven playoff series into a best-of-three.

A 5-1 loss to the Blues on Sunday afternoon has the first-round matchup tied 2-2.

Jets forward Kyle Connor opened the scoring in the first period but it was all downhill from there, with the home team scoring five unanswered goals and eventually chasing starting goaltender Connor Hellebuyck from a second straight game.

St. Louis won Game 3 last Thursday by a 7-2 score after Winnipeg had grabbed the first two in their rink.

The series now shifts to Canada Life Centre for a crucial Game 5 on Wednesday. Game 6 is now guaranteed to go down Friday in St. Louis. Should a Game 7 be necessary, the winner-take-all affair would happen next Sunday in Winnipeg.

Suspect charged with firearms offences

2:29 PM

A Winnipeg man has been arrested after he was allegedly caught loading a gun outside a home in the 100 block of Kate Street Saturday afternoon. The Winnipeg Police Service responded to a report of a male in possession of a firearm at about 2:32 p.m. April 26.

Central District patrol officers located a 43-year-old man who wet back into a residence upon seeing police. A suspect was arrested with help from the tactical support unit and officers recovered a firearm during the arrest.

Frank Joseph Roussin, 43, is charged with possession of a weapon, possession of an unauthorized firearm, possession of a loaded or restricted firearm, possession of a prohibited weapon and possession of a firearm obtained by crime.

He was detained in custody.

Firefighters respond to five residential, commercial blazes

10:22 AM

Firefighters were called to several fires this weekend, one of which required guests at a King Edward Street hotel to evacuate.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to four fires on Saturday and one early Sunday. No injuries were reported in any of the blazes, but some residential and commercial buildings sustained considerable damage.

A fire in one of the suites at a hotel in the 600 block of King Edward Street caused occupants of the building to self-evacuate before 8:30 a.m. Saturday. The fire was extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system and crews ventilated smoke from the building.

“Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental, caused when combustibles were left close to a hot cooktop. Fire damages were contained to the suite of origin. Other areas of the hotel sustained water damage. Damage estimates are not available,” the City of Winnipeg stated in a news release.

At 1:51 p.m. Saturday, firefighters were called to a commercial building in the 500 block of Ellice Avenue, where a fire is believed to have started because of careless disposal of a cigarette. Firefighters quickly extinguished that fire, the City of Winnipeg stated in a news release.

Just before 5:30 p.m., a house fire in the 800 block of Ingersoll Street broke out and eventually spread to a neighbouring house, despite crews’ efforts to keep it co5ntained. The neighbouring house sustained moderate damage and the house where the fire started is expected to be a complete loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

At 6:37 p.m., firefighters evacuated residents of a single-storey home in the 600 block of Alfred Avenue as smoke billowed out. That fire is under investigation and no damage estimates were available Sunday.

In the wee hours of Sunday morning, just before 1 a.m., firefighters were called to a vacant house in the 1500 block of Alexander Avenue. Crews declared the fire under control within 30 minutes after they arrived on scene.
