Search leads to drug arrest on Langside

Winnipeg police have laid drug charges after searching a residence in the 600 block of Langside Street in the West End Friday.

An investigation began in mid-May involving drugs and firearms at the Langside Street residence. A search led to police seizing 65 grams of cocaine with an estimated street value of about $5,200, two replica air pistols, ammunition and body armour vests.

A 32-year-old woman, Autumn Muchikekwannape, has been charged with eight offences related to drugs and firearms. She was detained in police custody.

Wildfires, need to free up hotel space prompts cancellation of court education session

Manitoba wildfires and the ongoing state of emergency in the province have prompted a cancellation from the courts in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

A joint education session was scheduled in Winnipeg this week for the Manitoba Court of King’s Bench and the Saskatchewan Court of King’s Bench, but the session has now been cancelled, as per a joint statement from both courts Sunday.

“Given the state of emergency in both Saskatchewan and Manitoba and the pressing need to make hotel spaces available for evacuees from the wildfires,  Chief Justice (Glenn) Joyal of the Manitoba Court of King’s Bench and Chief Justice (Martel) Popescul of the Saskatchewan Court of King’s Bench have determined that it is in the public interest that the joint education meeting scheduled for this coming week be cancelled,” the statement reads.

“The courts are mindful of the serious and devastating impact these fires are having on communities in both provinces and of the institutional need to provide support to the efforts already underway.”
