Pedestrian struck near Manitoba legislature
3:41 PM
A pedestrian was taken to hospital Monday after being struck by a motorist near the Manitoba Legislative Building.
Police were sent to the area of Osborne Street and Granite Way at about 2:50 p.m. One person was transported to hospital, but police did not know their condition, Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Const. Stephen Spencer said.
The collision happened sometime before 2:34 p.m., when the City of Winnipeg posted on X that motorists in the area should expect delays, warning emergency crews were already on scene and blocking two southbound lanes on Osborne. One of the lanes had reopened by 4:21 p.m., but the curb lane remained blocked.
Man charged with child pornography offences
2:59 PM
A Winnipeg man is facing charges after police allegedly found child sexual abuse material on his phone.
The Winnipeg Police Service’s internet child exploitation (ICE) unit launched an investigation this month and arrested a man early Wednesday. Police seized a phone from him and obtained a search warrant, and ICE investigators seized more electronic devices from a downtown-area home.
Matthew De Paz, 30, has been charged with possession of child pornography, accessing child pornography and voyeurism.
Brandon man, 32, drowns in Sandy Lake
2:09 PM
A Brandon man is dead after he drowned at Sandy Lake Beach on Saturday night.
Yellowhead RCMP were sent to the beach at about 11:05 p.m. and found emergency crews performing CPR on a man who was later pronounced dead.
Police said Monday it appears the 32-year-old man had been swimming along with three other people when they noticed he was missing.
He was found in the water shortly after and taken to a nearby dock.
No charges after driver suffers hypothermia inside crashed car
2:03 PM
The province’s police watchdog is not recommending charges after a driver fleeing officers crashed a car and suffered hypothermia while stuck in the vehicle.
The car sped past a police vehicle that was in a Henderson Highway parking lot near Johnson Avenue late on Feb. 17. Officers tried to stop the driver, but he sped away.
The car rear-ended another vehicle and hit a light standard at the intersection of Chief Peguis Trail and Henderson.
A passenger fled on foot but was arrested. The driver was trapped in the damaged car and had to be removed by the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.
Both the driver and passenger were taken to hospital. The driver suffered a broken leg and hypothermia because of how long it took to remove him from the car.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba said in a news release Monday that a report on the incident will be made available after charges against the driver have been dealt with in court.
Stony Mountain prison staff seize unauthorized items
1:33 PM
Corrections officials say guards seized unauthorized items with a prison value of more than $400,000 at Stony Mountain Institution last week.
The items seized Thursday included cannabis concentrate, tobacco, nicotine patches, a cellphone and a charger, Correctional Service of Canada said in a news release Monday.
The RCMP have been notified.
ATV driver found dead in Ebb and Flow First Nation creek
11:18 AM
A man was killed when an ATV rolled down a steep slope and into a creek in Ebb and Flow First Nation this weekend.
Ste. Rose du Lac RCMP were contacted about the incident at about 8:30 a.m. Saturday. The ATV was found on its side in about three feet of water, police said in a news release Monday.
An initial investigation determined the ATV rolled down the slope overnight and pinned the driver, RCMP said. The 53-year-old local man, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Man arrested in Teulon homicide
9:59 AM
Police arrested a man in a cornfield after a fatal shooting in Teulon on Sunday.
Stonewall RCMP were sent to a home on 7th Avenue Southeast at 10:40 p.m. and found a 37-year-old man with life-threatening injuries. He was transported to hospital and later pronounced dead.
His death is being investigated as a homicide.
While officers were at the home, a patrolling officer spotted a vehicle believed to have been involved in this homicide and tried to stop the driver. The pursuit ended abruptly when the vehicle went into a field, Manitoba RCMP said in a news release Monday.
Police sealed off the area and eventually arrested the lone person in the vehicle. Officers found and seized a gun.
A 24-year-old man remains in police custody. Investigators are not searching for any other suspects, RCMP said.
Barron, Jets settle on two-year deal
9:48 AM
And then there were two.
The Winnipeg Jets and restricted free agent Morgan Barron agreed to terms on a two-year deal on Monday, which allows both sides to avoid arbitration.
Barron’s deal calls for an AAV of $1.85 million, which represents a modest raise from the $1.35 million AAV on his previous two-year pact.
Barron will make $1.7 million in the first season of the new contract and gets a raise to $2 million in Year 2.
The versatile forward had eight goals and 15 points in 74 games last season and has accumulated 30 goals and 60 points in 256 career NHL games with the Jets and New York Rangers, who drafted Barron in the sixth round (174th overall) in the 2017 NHL Draft.
Barron, 26, is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 of 2027.
The Jets have two restricted free agents remaining: defenceman Dylan Samberg and forward Gabe Vilardi.
