Bombers outlast Redblacks 30-27

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeated the Ottawa Redblacks 30-27 Thursday night in front of a sold-out crowd at Princess Auto Stadium.

The win improves the Bombers to 5-4 on the year. With the loss, Ottawa drops to 3-7.

The Blue and Gold head to Montreal next week to take on the Alouettes on Thursday.

Man hurt in random attack on Furby Street

Police say they are searching for two attackers after a man was injured in a random, unprovoked incident early Wednesday.

The man, 61, told police he had parked his vehicle on the 700 block of Furby Street and was walking to his home when two suspects on bicycles approached him at about 3 a.m.

One was armed with a baseball bat, and the other had a knife. They demanded property and assaulted the victim with the weapons, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Thursday.

The man suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries to his upper body. Officers gave him emergency medical aid until an ambulance arrived.

The victim was transported to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable.

Piles of pelts pilfered from Fort Gibraltar

A thief or thieves scaled the walls around the replica Fort Gibraltar site in Whittier Park this week, making off with an estimated thousands of dollars worth of furs.

Breanne Lavallee-Heckert, Festival du Voyageur’s executive director, said about 140 fur pelts were taken. The theft happened sometime between 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday morning.

The hundreds of pounds of furs were stolen from the fort’s trading post cabin after a window was smashed.

The pelts — of beavers, muskrats, coyotes, foxes, lynx and bears — are used for educational demonstrations about life at historical fur-trading posts throughout the year, and at the festival’s namesake winter events.

The pelts are marked with Festival du Voyageur’s logo or initials, and the kind of animal the fur came from.

The theft has been reported to police.

Woman killed in Cross Lake rollover crash

A young woman was killed in a single-vehicle rollover crash in Cross Lake early Thursday.

RCMP were sent to the intersection of Main Street and Halcrow Road shortly before 3 a.m.

The driver, a 20-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 30-year-old male passenger was treated by emergency crews at the scene.

Both people were wearing seatbelts, RCMP said in a news release.

Fire in vacant Maryland Street house

Crews extinguished a fire in a vacant house on Maryland Street early Thursday.

Firefighters were sent to the 500 block at 6:25 a.m. and declared the fire under control shortly after 6:44 a.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Canadian Mennonite University to offer teaching degrees

Canadian Mennonite University will become the seventh post-secondary institute in the province to offer teaching degrees.

The Professional Certification Unit has agreed to recognize a new bachelor of education degree program, deputy education minister Brian O’Leary announced Wednesday.

“I look forward to collectively welcoming our new colleagues to the teaching profession, and to seeing the valuable contributions CMU graduates will make to K to 12 education in Manitoba,” O’Leary wrote in a letter to public school superintendents, independent school principals, First Nations education directors, university deans and union leaders.

CMU’s inaugural class of student teachers is anticipated to graduate in 2028.

The Winnipeg-based university joins the University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg, Université de Saint-Boniface, Brandon University, University College of the North and Yellowquill University College.

Jewish federation issues warning about email

The Jewish Federation of Winnipeg reported a possible cybersecurity incident Thursday morning after recipients received an email purporting to be sent by the organization’s president.

The email, which has Jeff Lieberman’s name attached to it, asked recipients to “reconfirm the documents below” by clicking on a link.

Federation officials sent an email a short time later advising recipients not to click on the link.

“It has come to our attention that you may have received an email from Jeff Lieberman asking you to click a link — please do not click any links without first verifying by phone,” the official wrote.

“If you have clicked a link, your email may become compromised. Please change your password, etc., and take extra precautions.”

Plaques installed at former residential school in Portage la Prairie

Three plaques were unveiled Thursday at the National Indigenous Residential School Museum of Canada, 50 years after the residential school where it is located closed.

The museum is located in the former Portage la Prairie Indian Residential School, on land belonging to Long Plain First Nation. The building closed in 1975 and was deemed a national historic site in 2020.

The plaques are written in Anishinaabemowin, Anishinaabemowin syllabics, Cree, Cree syllabics, Dakota, English and French.

“The plaques are symbols of resilience, strength and a place where stories are embedded in truth and the spirits honoured,” Lorraine Daniels, the museum’s executive director, said in a news release.

“These memorials acknowledge their legacy of pain and injustices endured with courage and dignity. Their lives matter. Their voices matter. Their healing matters. We are still here.”

Two arrested after Boyd Avenue killing

A man has been charged with manslaughter after a homicide on Boyd Avenue earlier this month.

Darian Allen Gaige Sam, 27, was arrested Tuesday. He is also charged with two counts of failing to comply with a release order.

The Winnipeg Police Service said Thursday that Sam and Breydon Henry Cadieux-Kwiatkowski, 26, were in an altercation on the 600 block on Aug. 6. Cadieux-Kwiatkowski was taken to hospital in critical condition and later died of his injuries.

Police said the two men knew each other.

Court records show at the time of the killing Sam was on release after being charged with several weapon and drug charges for alleged offences in February and May.

Officers also arrested David Allen Kirton, 64, on Tuesday. He is charged with accessory after the fact. The WPS said he helped Sam escape after the incident.

Both men were detained in custody.
