Two LRSD schools placed in hold-and-secure safety protocol

4:15 PM

Victor Mager School and Dakota Collegiate in St. Vital were put in hold-and-secure safety protocols Friday morning.

The Winnipeg Police Service told the schools they were “pursuing an individual” in the community and to secure the schools, Louis Riel School Division spokesperson Emmalee Blackadar said in an email.

The hold-and-secure was lifted after police said it was safe to do so.

WPS spokesperson Const. Claude Chancy said in an email there was an “incident” in the area and that information about the incident is expected to be released in the coming days. He provided no other details.

Online booking opens for two QuickCare clinics

2:00 PM

Patients can now book same-day appointments for the Selkirk and Steinbach QuickCare clinics through the Medinav portal, the province said Friday.

The online system allows Manitobans to book same-day and next-day appointments at participating clinics.

The portal can also be used to book appointments at walk-in Connected Care clinics, extended hours primary care clinics, Pan Am Clinic, and minor injury and illness clinics at Misericordia Health Centre and in Brandon.

The portal is at medinav.ca.

Crews put out two fires Friday morning

1:04 PM

One person was taken to hospital after a fire in St. Vital on Friday morning.

Firefighters were sent to a four-storey apartment building on Meadowood Drive at about 9 a.m. The only building matching that description is Meadowood Place at 525 Meadowood, part of the not-for-profit Village Canadien housing co-operative.

Crews declared the fire under control within half an hour.

Most residents of the building got out before crews arrived. Two residents were assessed by paramedics, and one was taken to hospital.

Damage was contained to the suite where the fire started.

“Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by unattended cooking,” the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a news release Friday.

Earlier, at about 8:30 a.m., crews were sent to a fire in a one-and-a-half storey house on the 200 block of Midwinter Avenue in Elmwood. They declared the fire under control shortly before 9 a.m.

Everyone inside got out before firefighters arrived.

Machete seized, man arrested

11:37 AM

Police say officers noticed a man carrying a large machete over his shoulder while he was walking downtown early Thursday.

The officers saw a man in the area of Ellice Avenue and Donald Street at 5:35 a.m.

Police found a man at Cumberland Avenue and Hargrave Street nearly 10 minutes later, arrested him and found a machete nearby.

A 27-year-old man faces charges of possession of a weapon and failing to comply with conditions of an undertaking.

He was released on another undertaking.

Person of interest sought after brawl

10:12 AM

Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a “person of interest” in their investigation into a large fight in the Exchange District last month.

Officers were sent to the area of Princess Street and Bannatyne Avenue at about 10:45 p.m. on Aug. 2. They learned two groups of people had gathered outside on the 100 block of Princess after a function at a nearby venue, and a fight started.

Reports of gunshots were made during the brawl, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Friday. No one was injured.

The WPS released two images of a person and said the major crimes unit would like to speak to them about the incident.

Police asked anyone who knows the person, or has video related to the brawl, to contact investigators at 204-986-6219, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or online.

The Winnipeg Police Service released two images of a person Friday, saying the major crimes unit would like to speak to them about a brawl in the Exchange District on Aug. 2.

Collaros sidelined, Streveler to start against Redblacks

9:30 AM

Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Zach Collaros has been ruled out for Saturday’s game against the Ottawa Redblacks at TD Place.

It’s the second straight game Collaros will miss since suffering a head injury late in the Banjo Bowl.

Chris Streveler will make his second consecutive start under centre, and will look to snap Winnipeg’s three-game losing streak. The 6-7 Bombers currently hold the third and final playoff spot in the West Division.
