Man arrested after St. Vital home invasion

Police have arrested a man after a couple was threatened during a home invasion in St. Vital.

The couple was in their home on the first 100 block of Bayfield Avenue shortly before 5:30 a.m. Friday when they heard someone banging on their front door. A stranger armed with a knife pushed his way inside, grabbing the glasses off a woman’s face. He threatened to stab the 48-year-old woman and a 53-year-old man with a butcher knife.

Police officers arrived and arrested a 35-year-old man. He has been charged with two counts of uttering threats and single counts of breaking into a home to commit robbery and possession of a weapon. The man was detained in custody.

Man assaulted ‘visibly pregnant’ woman at knifepoint: police

A man is accused of assaulting two women, one of whom was “visibly pregnant,” while armed with a knife Friday.

Three people were at a mutual acquaintance’s home on the 400 block of Alfred Avenue when a dispute broke out at about 2 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Saturday.

An argument over money broke out between the man, who had been drinking, and the pregnant woman, the WPS said. He tried to stab the woman, who backed away, the release said.

Another woman intervened. The man and the second woman fell through a broken handrail to the ground, where the man stabbed the woman, the WPS said.

Two other men in the home restrained the armed man until police arrived.

The second woman was transported to hospital in stable condition. The first woman was not hurt, the WPS said.

A 50-year-old man is charged with two counts of assault with a weapon. He was detained in custody.

Stolen iPad tracked to homeless encampment near Waterfront Drive

Three people are facing charges after police tracked an iPad stolen from a rented vehicle to a nearby homeless encampment.

Officers patrolling on the 500 block of Waterfront Drive shortly before 9:30 a.m. Thursday were told a parked vehicle rented by out-of-town guests had been broken into. The vehicle’s rear window was smashed, and a backpack with the iPad in it had been stolen.

The device was tracked to the encampment, and police found the tablet and arrested a man and a woman.

The backpack had an AirTag, and officers tracked it to the area of Vaughan Street and Portage Avenue, where they saw a man wearing the bag.

Two men, ages 39 and 42, and a 34-year-old woman are facing one charge each of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. They were released on appearance notices.
