Winter weather brings down power lines, crews restoring outages

9:59 PM

Thousands of Manitobans are temporarily without electricity after severe weather in northern, eastern and western Manitoba.

High winds, rain and heavy wet snow caused damage and brought trees down on overhead power lines in many areas, leading to widespread power outages. More than 12,000 customers were affected, Manitoba Hydro stated in a news release.

About 4,500 customers remain without power on Monday night. Manitoba Hydro stated it will update restoration times as crews assess damage and begin repairs on Tuesday.

Manitoba Hydro posts updates on social media, and you can see the outage map here.

Jets thankful for 5-2 victory over Islanders

2:47 PM

ELMONT, N.Y  – The Winnipeg Jets celebrated Thanksgiving Monday with an impressive 5-2 victory over the New York Islanders.

Goaltender Eric Comrie, making his first start of the young season, stopped 33 of 35 shots he faced.

Morgan Barron, Nino Niederreiter, Tanner Pearson and Logan Stanley all had a goal and an assist, with Mark Scheifele adding the other tally into an empty net.

Jonathan Toews also recorded his first point as a member of the Jets with a first-period assist.

It wasn’t all good news, as the Jets lost forward Cole Koepke to a lower-body injury following a shot block. He joins a growing list of hurt players which includes forwards Adam Lowry and Cole Perfetti and defencemen Dylan Samberg and Haydn Fleury.

Winnipeg improves to 2-1-0 while New York falls to 0-3-0.

The Jets conclude this two-game road trip on Thursday night in Philadelphia.
