A 5-2 victory on Thursday at Philadelphia was the club’s third straight after opening the new season with a loss to the Dallas Stars.

Mark Scheifele led the way with two goals, while Morgan Barron, Vlad Namestnikov and Tanner Pearson had singles. Kyle Connor chipped in with a pair of assists while Connor Hellebuyck stopped 15 of the 17 shots he faced.

The Jets now return home to take on the Nashville Predators on Saturday night at Canada Life Centre.

Winnipeg mayor endorses bill to extend detention for drug users

12:08 PM

Winnipeg’s mayor is weighing in on an NDP bill that would increase the maximum detention period for severely intoxicated people to 72 hours from 24.

The change is intended to give people time to safely come down from the effects of toxic drugs. Mayor Scott Gillingham announced Thursday he has filed a formal submission in support of Bill 48, the Protective Detention and Care of Intoxicated Persons Act. It would replace the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act.

“Every day, our police officers, paramedics, outreach workers and community volunteers encounter people who are in crisis, often under the influence of increasingly toxic drugs. These situations are heartbreaking, dangerous and far too common,” Gillingham said in a written submission to a provincial standing committee.

He said the current act was written for a different time.

“It was designed for a world where alcohol was the primary intoxicant encountered on our streets. Today, we face an entirely different challenge,” he wrote. “The drugs people are consuming are more potent, unpredictable and deadly.”

Gillingham said society is not helping anyone by allowing them to spiral further into addiction.

“Real compassion means acting when someone cannot act for themselves,” he wrote.

The legislative committee that is reviewing the bill will hear public presentations Thursday evening.

Teen hit by vehicle in Selkirk, airlifted to hospital

11:20 AM

A teen walking in the middle of the road was hit by a vehicle in Selkirk on Wednesday night, RCMP said.

RCMP were sent to the site of the collision on Manitoba Avenue, just west of Highway 9A, at 9:30 p.m. Officers determined two young males were walking east when one of them was hit by an eastbound vehicle. One of the males was seen lying in the south ditch, police said in a news release Thursday.

The teen, a resident of the Rural Municipality of St. Andrews, was flown to hospital in critical condition by STARS air ambulance. The other pedestrian was not injured, RCMP said.

The driver of the vehicle, a 27-year-old St. Andrews man, was not hurt.

Man pours gas on himself, starts fire

10:48 AM

A man poured gasoline on himself and started a fire in the lobby of a condominium building in the Exchange District on Wednesday.

Police were sent to the building on the 100 block of Bannatyne Avenue at 4:15 p.m. Officers learned a man in his 30s “experiencing mental distress” poured gas on himself and his surroundings before a sprinkler system quickly extinguished the fire.

Residents were evacuated for their safety.

The man was taken to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Thursday.

A WPS spokesman said that because of the Personal Health Information Protection Act, he could not confirm whether the man actually caught fire or whether his injuries were from smoke inhalation or something unrelated to the fire.

The man is “associated” with the building, police said.

Police arrested the man after he was stabilized in hospital. He faces a charge of arson with disregard for human life and three counts of failing to comply with conditions of a release order.

He was released on an undertaking.

Two arrested after bus driver assaulted

9:31 AM

A man and a woman are in custody after a bus driver was assaulted Monday night.

Officers were sent to the 2000 block of Main Street shortly before 10 p.m.

A man assaulted the 26-year-old driver after a dispute began, and the woman spat on him, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Thursday.

After the pair got off the bus, the man slashed the outside of the bus with a knife before the vehicle pulled away, police said. Officers arrested two people in a parking lot on the 1800 block of Main a short time later.

A 29-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman have been charged with assault. The man is also charged with four counts of failing to comply with conditions of a release order, while the woman is also charged with possession of methamphetamine. She was wanted on a warrant for two counts of theft under $5,000.
