Proposal aims to extend St. Boniface Street Links lease

6:00 PM

A homeless outreach organization appears set to keep a city-owned property for at least one more year, which it uses to help vulnerable people escape extreme weather.

On Friday, council’s property and development committee will be asked to cast a final vote on extending the St. Boniface Street Links lease of 604 St. Mary’s Rd. until Nov. 30, 2026, with a rent of $1 per year.

A new report notes the city is negotiating a long-term lease of the site with Street Links but hasn’t yet reached a deal.

The organization has used the site to offer a 24-7 city-funded safe space since 2023.

Province seeks to buy city land around Lemay Forest: report

5:59 PM

The City of Winnipeg is being asked to sell land around Lemay Forest to the province for $1 to help the senior government create a provincial park, according to a new city staff report.

The Manitoba government expropriated two parcels of land at the site in 2025 and was initially expected to expropriate city land just beside it. However, the city learned in September that the province now wishes to buy its land for the nominal fee instead, the report says.

City staff don’t recommend any change, stating there is not enough information to determine if council should approve or decline the sale option.

Shots fired in Crane River

2:11 PM

A man has been charged after someone fired a shotgun at a home and shot another round in the direction of a resident.

Police, using a drone, spotted a man lying in a field behind the home. Officers arrested the man after finding him hiding under stairs behind the home. A police dog found a gun in the field.

A 24-year-old man is facing four firearms charges and one count of mischief under $5,000.

Niverville RCMP detachment opens to public

1:11 PM

A new municipal RCMP detachment in Niverville opened to the public Monday.

Construction started in early 2023, and officers began moving into the building in early 2025. It is now open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

It is staffed by four officers and a public service employee.

The Niverville officers are under the umbrella of the St. Pierre-Jolys detachment. Each detachment will complement each other, but the Niverville members will primarily focus on that town, a Manitoba RCMP spokeswoman said Monday.

Mayor Myron Dyck said in a news release that the growing community is glad there is an increased police presence there.

“As the Town of Niverville continues to grow, we are thankful for the RCMP presence in our community,” he said.

“The opening of this new detachment is an exciting continuation of that presence and will provide peace of mind to residents that a detachment is now so close to home.”

The Niverville RCMP detachment is located at 329A Bronstone Dr.

Teen facing charges after Portage la Prairie carjacking

12:50 PM

A teen robbed a senior of his pickup truck while wielding a box cutter, then drove through a school parking lot and damaged three police vehicles before crashing into a ditch, police say.

Portage la Prairie RCMP were sent to the site of the carjacking on Fisher Avenue West at about 8:45 a.m. They were told a teen tried to carjack a stranger’s vehicle and failed, then robbed a 77-year-old man of his Toyota Tacoma. The man suffered minor injuries, RCMP said in a news release Monday.

The carjacker sped off eastbound on the Trans-Canada Highway and hit a  vehicle, driven by a 64-year-old woman, from behind. The woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital, RCMP said.

Officers later saw the truck on Highway 13, headed south into Oakville.

“Oakville School was put into lockdown as a precautionary safety measure,” the release said.

After officers spotted the truck again on a residential street, the driver went through the school’s parking lot, hit a police vehicle and sped away northbound on Highway 13.

The Tacoma and more police vehicles “made contact” as Mounties tried to stop the stolen truck. It overturned into a ditch along Provincial Road 430, about 500 metres north of the Trans-Canada.

A youth from the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie is facing more than a dozen criminal charges, including driving while over the legal limit and two counts of assault with a weapon. He faces four more charges under the Highway Traffic Act.

Jets’ captain set for season debut versus Kings

12:21 PM

Winnipeg Jets captain Adam Lowry is set to make his season debut on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Kings.

“That decision has been made,” said Lowry, who skated on a line with Nino Niederreiter and Tanner Pearson during Monday’s on-ice workout.

Lowry missed the first 12 games of the campaign after undergoing off-season hip surgery.

The Jets are riding a three-game winning streak and boast a record of 9-3-0.

Jets head coach Scott Arniel said that forward Morgan Barron is out week-to-week after suffering an injury in Saturday’s s 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins, while forward Gustav Nyquist remains day-to-day with an undisclosed injury.

Ethics commissioner Schnoor resigns

10:13 AM

The province’s ethics commissioner, Jeffrey Schnoor, has announced his resignation.

“On behalf of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, we extend our sincere appreciation to Mr. Schnoor for his steadfast dedication, professional integrity and many years of distinguished public service,” the release said.

Schnoor released a report in May saying former Progressive Conservative premier Heather Stefanson and cabinet ministers Cliff Cullen and Jeff Wharton broke conflict-of-interest laws after losing the 2023 election.
