Thousands of fare evaders denied rides since bus crackdown began

2:28 PM

Thousands of would-be bus passengers have been turned away since the city started cracking down on riders who don’t pay their fares in September.

Since then, 7,614 people were either denied rides or walked away before being prompted to pay, the City of Winnipeg said Wednesday.

The city said 931 warnings have been issued and that 359 riders paid after being asked. The warnings were given out by safety officers for fare-related issues.

Winnipeg Transit inspectors have made more than 6,800 fare checks since September, and safety officers have spent more than 1,400 hours enforcing issues.

The Winnipeg Police Service said on Nov. 6 that its officers have made nine arrests under the Criminal Code and intervened in 41 fare-evasion incidents since it began placing more of its officers on and around buses in September.

The transit service loses an estimated $7 million to $10 million to fare evasion each year.

Feds, province provide funds for Duha Color Services

12:55 PM

The federal and provincial governments are contributing nearly $160,000 for facility upgrades and training workers at Duha Color Services.

The world’s largest manufacturer of paint swatches and colour charts will use some of the funds to train 136 workers.

Duha recently acquired one of its largest competitors, the U.S.-based Colwell Color, and will move equipment and operations to Winnipeg from Colwell’s facility in Indiana. The move will create 94 new positions and provide training for 42 current employees.

Facility modifications and new equipment will improve productivity and allow Duha to integrate Colwell’s customer base and technology, a provincial news release said Wednesday. The cost-shared investment is through the Canada-Manitoba Labour Market Transfer Agreement.

Duha was founded in 1948. Its headquarters and largest manufacturing facility are in Winnipeg, with operations and partnerships in the U.S., China, Germany, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia.

Rural Municipality of Morris business, targeted again, badly damaged in arson

9:22 AM

A rural business was set ablaze early Friday, less than a month after someone  smashed a front-end loader into it and tried to set the building on fire.

Police said the employee was threatened at about 11 a.m., when they approached the thief in the store’s parking lot on the 1000 block of Empress Street.

Police asked anyone with information about the incident to call police at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS).
