Man arrested in Dauphin incident

1:42 PM

RCMP say a man reached for a large knife on his belt after officers saw him trespassing in Dauphin on Tuesday.

Police spotted the man on a property on Main Street North at about 3 p.m. The man reached for the weapon after an officer told him not to, Manitoba RCMP said in a news release Wednesday.

Officers searched the man and found a small amount of methamphetamine, unmarked tobacco and cash, RCMP said.

The 43-year-old Dauphin man faces charges of possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and possession of a scheduled substance. He was remanded into custody.

Winnipeg woman, 40, charged in Trans-Canada Highway crash west of Falcon Lake

1:32 PM

A woman has been charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm after a crash on the Trans-Canada Highway west of Falcon Lake.

Mounties said in a news release that a westbound SUV crossed over the centre line and hit an eastbound pickup truck Monday. Falcon Lake RCMP were sent to the collision at Falcon Creek Road shortly after 5:40 p.m.

The man driving the truck, a 68-year-old Ontario resident, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a Winnipeg hospital by STARS air ambulance. The driver of the SUV, a 40-year-old Winnipeg woman, was treated for minor injuries and released from hospital.

She was released from police custody on an appearance notice after being charged.

Province expands paramedic seats

12:33 PM

The province is creating a new direct-entry primary care paramedics program at RRC Polytech next fall.

The 14 seats will allow students to begin training and working sooner. The seats in the new stream will increase total enrolment in the program to 40.

“Our government is opening doors for more Manitobans to pursue careers in emergency care,” Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Uzoma Asagwara said in a news release.

“This will help stabilize emergency medical services staffing, reduce wait times and ensure our paramedic workforce reflects the communities they serve. We’re committed to supporting workers from their first day of training through to advanced practice.”

The provincial government is also expanding training at University College of the North, adding 16 new primary care paramedics seats in Thompson for a total of 32 in that city and The Pas.

The Manitoba government also said it is shifting the paramedicine advanced care program at RRC Polytech to a full spring intake to align with practicum availability. Because of the move, 13 graduates will complete practicum placements with the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service in fall 2026 and fall 2027.

Bonivital Pool reopens after extensive reno

12:03 PM

A revamped, more accessible Bonivital Pool is welcoming back swimmers after it closed for more than a year for renovations.

The city pool at 1215 Archibald St., built in 1975, was shuttered from May 13, 2024 to Nov. 17, 2025 to allow for an extensive upgrade.

In a grand opening event Wednesday, city officials noted the changes have replaced components near the end of their expected life and added many new accessibility measures.

That includes the first accessible sauna at a city-operated facility, which is set to open soon, as well as an accessible shower lift.

A classroom/multi-purpose area that can host lessons and birthday parties was also added.

Upgrades to lighting, fire alarms, the mechanical system and the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system were also included in the $9.88-million project, funded by the city and province.
