Knife-wielding man arrested in Swan Valley Health Centre

2:34 PM

Officers used a Taser on a knife-wielding man who locked himself in an emergency room bathroom Sunday, RCMP say.

Swan River officers were sent to the Swan Valley Health Centre at about 2:30 p.m. They opened the door to find a man holding the knife. The man, who is known to police, was not a patient in the hospital at the time.

The man refused repeated demands to drop the knife, RCMP said in a news release Monday.

The 45-year-old Sapotaweyak Cree Nation man suffered a minor injury from his knife before police arrived, the release said. He was treated at the hospital and then taken into custody.

The man is charged with the possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes.

Operation Red Nose needs volunteers

11:27 AM

Operation Red Nose Winnipeg says it has fewer than one-third of the 600 volunteers it needs to launch Friday.

The program provides safe rides home during the holiday season, helping prevent impaired driving.

“Operation Red Nose is more than a ride program — it’s about protecting lives and ensuring everyone gets home safely,” spokeswoman Elisha Dacey said in a news release. “We cannot do this without the support of our community. We need people to step up now.”

Volunteers are needed for driving, navigating and dispatch roles. Training is provided, and the shifts are flexible.

To volunteer, go online.

Goo Goo Dolls, Dashboard Confessional playing arena

11:26 AM

In the wake of renewed popularity stemming from their 1990s hit Iris gaining fresh traction on TikTok, alt-rock group the Goo Goo Dolls are coming to Canada Life Centre on March 29.

Formed in Buffalo, N.Y., in 1986 by John Rzeznik and Robby Takac, the band moved from a scrappy punk vibe to a more polished adult alternative sound in the mid-’90s, amassing hits such as Name, Slide and Black Balloon and collecting Grammy nominations.

The duo is touring in support of its recent EP, Summer Anthem. They will be joined by Dashboard Confessional, the emo band fronted by songwriter Chris Carrabba.

Tickets (prices TBA) go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. at Ticketmaster.ca and livenation.com. Special VIP packages are available.

Water back on at Seven Oaks Hospital

11:15 AM

The water supply at Seven Oaks Hospital was restored at about midnight Monday after it was shut off over the weekend because of a water-main break.

“Work is underway to fully restore all services at the hospital, and we will continue collaborating with regional partners to maintain continuity of care for our patients,” a spokesperson for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority said in a news release Monday morning.

“We want to extend our sincere gratitude to all staff for their dedication and tireless efforts during this challenging time.”

Flooding was noticed in a lower level of the facility at about 10 p.m. Saturday, the WRHA said Sunday.

The hospital’s urgent care centre remained open while the water supply was shut down. Water service at the Wellness Institute was not affected.

Pedestrian, 67, dies after being hit Friday

10:29 AM

A woman has died after she was hit by a vehicle on Osborne Street on Friday.

She is the ninth pedestrian killed on Winnipeg streets this year and the 16th person killed in a vehicle collision.

As previously reported, the pedestrian was struck at the intersection with Roslyn Road at about 1:20 p.m.

She was taken to hospital in stable condition and later died from her injuries, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Monday.

Police said the woman, 67, was crossing Osborne when she was hit by a 2014 Ford Fusion travelling west on Roslyn.

The 32-year-old man driving the vehicle remained at the scene of the crash. Police are investigating.

The WPS asked anyone with information about the collision, or video, to call the traffic division at 204-986-7085 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS).
