Hellebuyck helps Jets’ snap skid

8:58 PM

When Connor Hellebuyck led his team out of the tunnel for the pre-game warmup on Saturday night, there was an unmistakable injection of confidence and belief.

By the time the final buzzer sounded at Canada Life Centre, Hellebuyck made 24 saves and restored a sense of order in the Winnipeg Jets 5-1 victory over the Washington Capitals.

For a team that had just five wins in its previous 18 games (5-12-1), the Jets transformed into a responsible defensive team that suddenly had no issues with secondary scoring or special teams as they improved to 15-15-1.

The Jets, who celebrated the 1,000th NHL game for forward Nino Niederreiter prior to puck drop, close out a four-game homestand on Monday against the Ottawa Senators.

Woman charged after arson on Mayfair

4:50 PM

Police were called to an apartment building to respond to a fight and a fire in a suite on Friday morning.

On Saturday, Winnipeg police said a resident at 1-99 block of Mayfair Place pulled a fire alarm shortly before 6 a.m., after a mattress was set ablaze.

Police said the fire was deliberately set “following a dispute with family members,” and that there were no major injuries from the incident.

Residents of the building were required to evacuate due to the fire.

A 31-year-old woman was arrested and faces charges related to the fire. She was released and is to appear in court at a later date.

Three repeat shoplifters arrested: police

1:43 PM

City police have arrested three suspects they believe have been repeatedly shoplifting from Winnipeg stores.

Friday, police say a 49-year-old man was arrested after stealing merchandise from a store on the 1400 block of Portage Avenue. The man had four warrants out for his arrest and was also charged with theft under $5,000.

Earlier in the day, officers conducted a traffic stop on the 700 block of Burrows Avenue and arrested a 60-year-old man. Police say the man had five warrants out for his arrest and that they also seized one gram of fentanyl and one gram of cocaine during the arrest.

On Thursday, a 36-year-old woman was caught stealing merchandise from a store on the 1500 block of Regent Avenue. Police say the woman attempted to steal clothing when loss prevention officers intervened and subsequently contacted police.

Investigators believe she was involved in other retail theft incidents and had two warrants out for her arrest. The woman was also charged with theft under $5,000 and two counts of failure to comply with conditions of release order.

All three suspects were detained in custody.
